The Red Mussel Crew is a Madrid-based collective set up to promote Jamaican music and culture, mostly in monthly sessions. It was born in summer of 2001 by Chass & Mr. Postman, with the firm purpose of setting a new space in the city for the music they love.
Their insistence took reward when in September that year the Kurgan Pub in the popular Malasaña district downtown Madrid, hosted their first reggae night. From that point they started doing some more sessions combining this pub with another one called Freaks, in the same area, where they definitely got a name in Madrid’s Jamaican music circuit.
The following year another two selectors joined the couple. Ka and Doc Rudez started to participate in both pubs, so they were able to offer a session every fifteen days, a never seen before settled Jamaican parties in the very centre of the town. Also at that time, TRMC (as they are also known) used to have an occasional contributor, whose nickname was Seeker, helping with the website, and spinning some black music tunes in the sessions as well.
By the spring of 2002 the brand new www.redmusselcrew.com domain reached 4000 visitors and the collective had completed more than ten reggae nights. Consolidation came through all that hard work and after that summer they organized their first Anniversary Festival, who brought the locals Superagente86 along with The Cabrians from Mataró (Barcelona) in a spectacular ska live show who sold all the tickets and many people couldn’t get in. Later in October they brought another band to Madrid, Cyprinidians from the Basque Country, and the selector Onof-free, in another ska-rocksteady-reggae unforgettable night. In December they started a collaboration with the local Up Beat Radio Station creating a program called “Big Offence to Jamaican Popular Music” where from the humorous point of view they showed pathetic -or not so bad- versions of Jamaican Classics, the likes of “Let Your Yeah Be Yeah” by the oisters Guttersnipe, or “I’m In The Mood For Love” by Jamiroquai, to say one acceptable example, funny anyway but.
Parties kept on running once a month in Freaks Pub, and Kurgan was left to the new Amplíate Club where that anniversary concert was set. There they organized the first ever big meeting party for all the Jamaican-based selectors of the city, “Madrid Reggae All Stars” from the oldies to the newest digital Jamaican sounds, with big success.
By the end of 2003 The Mussels left Ampliate and Freaks and packed to Tikal club. In order to grow up, they decided to write a fanzine, obviously focused in their beloved Jamaican sounds, and another subjects like scooterism and inner city circuit news. The Whip! No.0 was the first release, a big success again with all the copies sold out in less than three months.
The following year the latter two left the group, but the founders Chass & Mr. Postman kept on moving, firstly in a village circa Barcelona called Beguès, where they shared plates with soundsystems like Kinpowah, Jah Ras or Jamaican Disease Crew, to say some. Later they visited another places like Castellón de la Plana, in a sensational meeting with the local Jamaican Memories deejays/producers.
In summer, another selector joined the collective. The Biologist brought Red Mussel his experience with the local bands and a new club to be set, La Vaca Austera. It quickly became their operations centre, and parties were bigger, more crowded and much funnier. They released the first regular number of the fanzine, The Whip! No.1, sold out again in Madrid and the rest of the country. In 2005 The Biologist decided to stay apart from the mussels, and the founder Chass left the country for a year, but Mr. Postman signed up another experienced local deejay, Smart Inez. Still with Chass in for the last weekend, they organized another big anniversary party, this time with 2 days full of Jamaican hits, with great guest stars like their brother-alike collective Up Town Pleasure collective, Shan ‘Blackbelt’ Jones from Bass Culture and Hot Drop, and the barcelonian Nutty from Big Boss Deejays. By that time, Postman had to show the name of the group in his own sometimes, but with great success, winning the audience’s 1st price in the “Battle of the Giants”, a Jamaican deejay contest in Barcelona. He was also invited to be the selector of the allnighter for one of the biggest scooter rallyes of Spain, located in Segovia, and again in the Scooter Club Madrid annual meeting.
In October 2006 Chass came back from his experience in Malta, where he also selected big Jamaican tunes for the locals, just in time to celebrate the 5th anniversary, again with a concert, this time bringing the Italian all-girl-formed ska band Tremende from Italy, and the local up-and-coming talent band Upsttemians.
Monthly reggae nights in La Vaca Austera were up again on fire with the trio for the whole winter, along with short performances in their friends’ own parties. Chass, Mr. Postman and Smart Inez always look forward to what’s next, writing more articles, cutting dubplates with big stars like Derrick Morgan or Roy Ellis aka Mr. Symarip, aiming to show their skills all over the country with a tasty receipt that includes bluebeat ska, rocksteady, soulful reggae and a touch of the latin and Spanish ska from the sixties, in their beloved vinyl format, straight from their stands to the dancehalls.

The Red Mussel Crew es un colectivo madrileño dedicado a la difusión de la música jamaicana, fundamentalmente a través de sesiones mensuales. El colectivo se forma tras el Verano de 2001 por sus dos miembros fundadores, Chass y Mr PostMan, motivados por la ausencia de ritmos sincopados en las noches madrileñas.
Su afán les llevó a concretar su primera fiesta el 27 de Septiembre de ese mismo año en el bar Kurgan, situado en el madrileño barrio de Malasaña. Tras esta, le siguieron varias sesiones hasta que, tres meses más tarde, se instalaran en un bar próximo al anterior que responde al nombre de Freaks (Antigua Huevería).
Es, a partir de Febrero, cuando incorporan dos nuevos miembros al colectivo, Ka y Doc Rudez, y comienzan a alternar veladas en los dos locales antes mencionados. Por esa época, surge un colaborador esporádico que aporta artículos a la web y se incorpora ocasionalmente a las fiestas de TRMC, valga la del 1 de Junio de 2002 como ejemplo. Él es Seeker, aficionado a la música de orígenes negroides al que hoy día podéis asediar en su residencia semanal en El 24.
Para la Primavera de 2002, la web ha registrado la nada desdeñable cifra de 4000 visitas y el colectivo había completado más de diez sesiones.
Pero si intensos habían sido los comienzos, Otoño de 2002 les confirmaría como una alternativa a las tediosas propuestas de la ciudad. El 12 y el 31 de Octubre, con motivo del primer aniversario de TRMC, se organizaron conciertos de, respectivamente, Superagente 86 con The Cabrians y Cyprinidians con Santoon Onof-free, selector del Pastizal Sound System.
Fue del 9 al 22 de Diciembre de 2002 de ese año cuando deciden colaborar en la incipiente radio Up Beat emitiendo un programa que, bajo el apelativo de “Grandes Afrentas A La Música Jamaicana”, recogía desastrosas versiones de artistas ajenos a estos ritmos que los habían asumido sin pudor alguno, valga como ejemplo la adaptación de los oisters suecos Guttersnipe del “Let Your Yeah Be Yeah” de The Pioneers o Jamiroquai reinterpretando el incunable del jazz “In The Mood For Love”.
Las fiestas continuaron al ritmo de una por mes, ya plenamente instalados en Freaks, aunque alternando con la Sala Amplíate, donde había tenido lugar el primer concierto citado, del que se vendieron todas las localidades, quedando gente imposibilitada para acceder al evento.
Una nueva cita, promovida por el cuarteto madrileño (ya sin Seeker en sus filas), tuvo lugar cuando reunieron, en estrecha colaboración con el resto de promotores de la ciudad, a lo más granado de la escena de la capital en el denominado 1st Madrid Reggae Allstars, que contó con dos ambientes diferenciados para amantes de los sonidos tempraneros (léase ska, reggae y rock steady) y para los seguidores de los nuevos riddims de roots, new roots y dancehall.
El final de 2003 supone el abandono de la Sala Amplíate y la incorporación de Tikal como nuevo hogar del colectivo, aunque realizando alguna que otra fiesta en Freaks. Situación que, por otro lado, se mantuvo hasta el cierre de éste. En torno al segundo aniversario, los mejillones se proponen completar un fanzine que fijara sus objetivos en torno a esos sonidos añejos de producción jamaiquina e inglesa, aunque con la mirada desviada hacia el mundo del escuterismo y la actualidad. The Whip! Nº0 vería la luz en Otoño-Invierno de 2003 y en cuestión de meses desaparecería de las tiendas.
La primera actuación allende las fronteras madrileñas tuvo lugar en Beguès, un pueblecito barcelonés que acogió la primera edición de Beguès Reggae Time, donde compartieron altavoces y equipo con Kinpowah, ganadores de las dos últimas edición del Spanish Clash, los bilbaínos Jah Ras Sound System o Jamaican Disease Crew, desde Girona, entre muchos otros. No sería la última, ya que en primavera de 2005 fueron invitados por Jamaican Memories a realizar una sesión en Castellón de la Plana.
Las sesiones y su dominio web, salpicado de artículos, letras de canciones en castellano, chat, comentarios de discos y diversos apartados; seguirían siendo una constante hasta que, en el Verano de 2004, incorporan a The Biologist, el último miembro en subirse a la barca y con el llegaría el cambio de residencia hasta establecerse actualmente en La Vaca Austera, sin extravasar nunca las fronteras del barrio de Malasaña. Tambien sería durante ese invierno cuando editarían el siguiente número de su fanzine, The Whip! Nº1, ahora con una mayor tirada y difusión a nivel estatal.
Con la inauguración de la temporada 2005-2006 se produjeron algunos cambios en sus filas, ya que The Biologist abandonaría el colectivo, y uno de sus miembros fundadores, Chass, dejaría el país de forma temporal, por lo que Mr. PostMan, ahora en solitario, decide fichar a Smart Tínez, formandose ahora un dueto irrepetible e inenarrable que duraría toda la temporada. Es en esta etapa en la que celebrarían cuatro años de existencia con una fiesta de dos dias en La Vaca Austera, en la que participarían otros colectivos y selectores, como los madrileños Up Town Pleasure o Shan “Blackbelt” Jones, o venido especialmente para la ocasion desde Barcelona, Nutty, de Big Boss DJ’s. También fue durante esta temporada 2005-2006 en la que Mr. PostMan participaría en la que se dio en llamar “I Battle of the Giants”, una sesión organizada en Barcelona por el Sindicato Soulcialista, en la que los selectores debian mostrar lo mejor de ellos mismos y en la que Mr. PostMan se llevaría a Madrid el premio del público. También fue durante esta temporada, mas concretamente en julio de 2006, donde Mr. PostMan fue invitado a la allnighter que celebró el Escuter Club Segovia con motivo del Scooter Rally de esta ciudad.
Comenzada la temporada 2006-2007, Chass volvería de su periplo maltés justo a tiempo para celebrar el 5º Aniversario de The Red Mussel Crew en septiembre de 2006, que fue festejado por todo lo alto con un espectacular concierto en la madrileña sala Gruta 77, y que contó con la participación de las italianas Tremende y los madrileños Upsttemians.
Más avanzada esta temporada, y sin dejar de realizar las habituales sesiones mensuales de La Vaca Austera, y más allá de las habituales colaboraciones con colectivos de la ciudad, como Up Town Pleasure, Mr. PostMan participó de nuevo en la allnighter de un Scooter Rally, esta ocasion en el de Madrid, de la mano del Scooter Club Madrid, con gran éxito y afluencia de público.
La formación actual del colectivo, compuesta por Chass, Mr PostMan y Smart Tínez, busca ampliar sus fronteras y visitar nuevas localizaciones peninsulares a las que dotar de su receta a base de un combinado de rock steady, soulful reggae y pinceladas de bluebeat yeyé en el siempre entrañable formato vinílico de siete pulgadas
