In the late 90s Redondo Beat was strictly (un) known as a drummer for Garage Rock bands like Mucus 2 and the Rock ’n’ Roll Airforce. But "Into the groove”, his 1999 solo debut, would bring the young Roman Aul back on his own track.
Hailing from a little village close to Gelnhausen, Germany (yes, that’s where the Monks were stationed as GIs), Aul played all the instruments himself, recorded on a four-track and released his first 45 on his own tiny Soul Sale Records label.
While working mostly alone in the studio, Aul always had a real Rock and Roll band backing him on stage. Besides tours through Europe and the US, there was always enough time for further musical outings such as the Brand New Love Affairs, a Memphis All Star Band featuring Jack Yarber, Tyler Keith and of course Scott Rogers, who recently joined Redondo Beat on bass for a very special tour, as the backing band for Sky Saxon of the Seeds!
Redondo Beat even had the honour to open for their local heroes from the 60s, the Monks,
when they played a show in Frankfurt in 2007.
Aul’s little brother Max had just joined the band when they were invited to do a recording session for Beatschaffe Originalaufnahmen at the Analogtonstudio nearby Bremen.
The Beatschaffe concept of recording bands live to stereo reel to reel simply worked out great with a brand new original, “The Spell I’m Under”!
In the meantime, Aul produced 2 Redondo Beat full-length albums and various singles.
When asked about his influences on “When the day turns in Tonight”, Redondo Beat’s current album, Aul mentioned listening to “… a lot of CCR and Girl Group stuff…”.
An interesting mixture, but one that does not nearly define the limits of the musical framework of the material released on TV Eye Records.
Redondo Beat just got back from a US East Coast tour with Van Thompson (Preacher’s Kids/Tyler Keith and the Apostles) on bass and are
working on Studio Album No. 3, which will be released later this year.
