Growing up with a generation thriving on popular music, it often comes as a surprise when a young band clearly expresses influences in jazz, funk, rockabilly, and even world music. With a diverse, recognizable sound, and pure dedication, Red Rosary is rising to the top of the youthful music scene in and around Guelph.
The band began in 2003 with Emma and Sara Bortolon-Vettor (twin sisters with a combined passion for music). The name, Red Rosary, came from a short story written by W.J. Wintle, which emphasized the influence that literature had on the band’s perspective. Over the next few years, Red Rosary ran through a cycle of musicians in creating distinct instrumental tracks. The Red Rosary we know today came together in 2007, simply as an experiment. In a year’s time, the arrangement was reworked to what remains today: Emma Bortolon-Vettor on guitar, Sara Bortolon-Vettor on vocals and keys, Emma TarBush on bass guitar, and Dana Bellamy on the drums.
Red Rosary has already gained a following, with an establishment of crowd favourites, such as “The Zoo” and “Fight the Good Fight”. There is no doubt that the uniqueness of each song keeps any audience interested and alert when something completely unexpected comes out in their set. However, one element that can be expected when it comes to Red Rosary is the quality and maturity of their music.
Having placed first at the Guelph Intra-School Battle of the Bands, Red Rosary received the recognition that captured the attention of event co-ordinators and other local bands who have asked them to perform. On top of this, the girls of Red Rosary are thrilled to share their music with the crowd at the annual Hillside festival this summer.
