About me: Set in the tiny Native village of Egegik on the shores of Alaska’s Bristol Bay, Bill Carter’s Red Summer is the thrilling story of one man’s journey from novice to seasoned fisherman over the course of four beautiful, brutal summers in one of the earth’s few remaining wild places. As millions of salmon race toward their annual spawning grounds, Carter learns the ancient, back breaking trade of the set net fisherman, one of the most exhilarating and dangerous jobs in the world.

The Salmon are getting closer, Ice is starting to thaw, days are getting longer, RED SUMMER is right around the corner. ....JUST REMEMBER LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!!!
Bill, reading Red Summer gave me back my cousins. My memories of Sharon and David date back to the years mostly between 1975 - 1979 after they left Hawaii. Sharon and I went to high school together, in Santa Barbara. Sharon was constantly harassing David - always throwing him in the pool, putting his head in the toilet, etc. She always picked on him. Then, one day David got bigger than Sharon, and that was it. Sharon knew David would kick her ass if she tried anything.
When Sharon and I graduated from high school, in 1979, I went to Disneyland for grad night and she went to Egegik to start her "career". I only saw her a few times during the next several years while I was in college and she was doing her thing. Ron, her half brother, stayed in Santa Barbara with his wife Lynnie and he was the captain of the Condor - a well respected whale watching boat in Santa Barbara. Ron and Lynnie moved to WA a few years ago but they were at my wedding in Santa Barbara in 2002, along with Sharon's mom, my Aunt Lee. I haven't seen David in a great many years so as I read "Red summer" I could only picture my little cousin getting "abused" by his older sister. (The last time I saw David was when I visited Sharon and David at Warren's house in Reno, NV. in 1981) I can, however, see David in the context that you portrayed him because apparently as an adult, he is still "little David" in his mannerisms.
But here's the best part of it all for me, though my friendship with my cousin was strong and close during high school, and even for some years after, I have not had the chance to know her life in Egegik like you have. I can't thank the powers that be enough that brought you into her world, to write a book about such an awesome woman and family, that allowed me the simple pleasure of discovering my cousins all over again.
Thanks, Bill, for writing such an incredible book about an even more incredible journey.
Nice book signing party at Roka! I'm four chapters in to Red Summer and would be further except my first grandchild Mr. Devin Beaumont made his entrance into the world on Thursday. I didn't get to see the photos because of the mob - hope to get back there in a couple of weeks when they re-open to check it out! Can't wait to see what you come up with next! You are the best!!!
I am the biggest Red Summer Fan ever in the history of the universe!!! I love this space and I've got pictures on the way soon. You are amazing for putting this site up.
