Donnie Smith, Born in Jacksonville Florida.
Smith started his career as a sound engineer for the local acts coming out of Jacksonville in the mid 1970..s. Jacksonville had a huge music scene during that period and was home to some of the most famous Southern rock bands to emerge from that genre. Smith worked with 38 Special , but a pending court date wouldnt allow him to do the next tour so he was asked by Donnie Van Zant to work with little brother Johnny’s band. Smith left just before the first record, No More Dirty Deals (Polydor). After being invited to bring his engineering talents to the newly formed Henry Paul Band (Atlantic records).Who was managed by the legendary Sound Seventy Corporation in Nashville. He remained with Henry Paul for three records. Smith departed from Henry Paul Band and Sound Seventy to join up with Producer Glen Johns ( who produced and or engineered The Beatles ,The Rolling Stones and The Who ) to record the Danny Joe Brown Band (former lead vocalist for Molly Hatchet)
In Nassau Bahamas at Compass Point Recording Studios for Epic Records. Smith toured for a year with Danny Joe Brown as fronthouse engineer. Completely burned out from seven years touring Smith decided to give touring a break and return to Jacksonville to open a recording studio with partner Pete Thoronton (Shinedown). Smith produced several acts including Trippin Balls, Inner Scarlet (Fabric Records) and demos for then unknown Limp Bizkit, the demos led to a record deal with Inner Scope Records. Smith was
Manager, tour manager and fronthouse sound engineer for Limp Bizkit. Smith after constant touring decided to return to Jacksonville to form his own band (Still Above Ground) with Shawn Eager. A Southern Rock Blues band. Released two independent CD..S. Donnie is currently producing the new CD for Triple Creek Records artist Tommy Steele, to be released this summer.
“Donnie is an outstanding producer and leader in the music industry. He has an amazing background working with the best artists in the business including Tommy Steele. I've witnessed his leadership, his ability to assemble top level talent, and music expertise as it unfolds in his producing Tommy Steele's new CD. I worked on Toby Keith's marketing/advertising campaigns for Ford, and consider Donnie to be one of the best as I partner with him to market and promote Tommy Steele.” January 8, 2009
