Who I'd like to meet:

We're going to use this site for our Coral Team which is a worldwide organization of trained volunteers that get together for specific projects to rescue, propagate (asexual reproduction), and plant hard and soft corals onto Reef Ball designed artificial reefs. (see www.artificialreefs.org for more).
We have conducted projects recently in the Cayman Islands, Thailand, Antigua, Curocao, Maldive Islands. We are planning future projects for Mexico, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cayman Islands, Maldive Islands and others.
A typical project is 12-20 volunteers, with one or two team leaders, half trained volunteers many being coral experts and half new participants. New participants have to pay their own way, but gain the experiance to become a trained volunteer. Trained volunteers earn a team certificate with up to 6 levels of knowledge for conducting coral restoration and mangrove restoration projects. With advancing levels, team members get more and more of their expenses paid for (such as food, hotel, and airfares) and sometime are even paid for their time. It all depends on the project...some are sponsored by external funding...other are not.
Volunteers are typically trained scuba divers. This is not a requirement, as every team can include a few non-divers to help with land based tasks. But, in general, to advance in certification levels will require diving skills.
The Coral Team is world renown as having developed the only cost effective method for coral plantings. If you are interested in being actively involved in coral reef conservation and restoration and you have the time and resources to be involved, please invite me to be your friend.
We'll post group bulletins to help you learn more about our work and to be kept abreast of when the next project might be activated. Activations often come with very short notice due to hurricanes, Tsunami, or other disasters....be here to be the first to find out and have the best chance of being selected for the teams. To learn more, go to www.artificialreefs.org then click on Volunteer Services Division logo on the left side of the page. If you can't join us, we always welcome financial support. You can do this directly to the Reef Ball Foundation (a 501 c 3 public charity) for a full tax deduction (www.reefball.org) or you can sponsor individual team members, for example by providing them with a plane ticket using your frequent flyer miles or by helping them to financially be able to join a trip.
If you just want to listen in...that's okay too...either way, just invite me as a friend.
