Renita Martin is currently touring two new shows – It Is the Seeing, which premiered at the Pillsbury House Theatre in Minnesota, and was presented by New World Theatre at the University of Massachusetts, and the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York; and her new play exploring the wrath of hurricane Katrina, Blue Fire On The Water, recently presented at The Theatre Offensive in Boston and Dixon Place in New York.
A multi-award winning artist, Renita, was recently featured in Curve Magazine as one of the “Best Lesbian Regional Theatre Artists”. Lately, her works have been anthologized in Boston Theater Marathon Ten Minute Plays (Baker’s Plays) and Voices Rising: Celebrating 20 Years of Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Writing (Other Countries III/Red Bone Press).
In addition to directing several acclaimed choirs including the Hampton’s Gospel Choir and St. Joseph’s Girls’ High School Gospel Choir, Renita has written and designed music for various theatre productions and television shows including Boston’s Touch FM morning show and local television show, “Shop Talk”.
Renita is founder and director of the award winning non-profit arts organization, Rhythm Visions Production Company, Incorporated, which brings arts education and training to communities of color.
She is the recipient of the Arch Bruce and Brown Foundation award for Blue Fire on the Water; the Herbert and Nancy Beigal New Play Award (Lo She Comes), and Annette B. Miller Playwriting Fellow, Brandies University; the Best of Boston New Play Award for Peace In The Midst; HIV/AIDS Education through the Arts Award, Fenway Community Health Center; and the Unsung Hero Award from Ebony Magazine for her community service through the arts.
