In the early 1990s Ben, Lloyd, and Bill began playing together at a Lehigh University talent night and continued the relationship. They started doing some local gigs and had to come up with a name. Religion & Cash derives from their respective day jobs. Ben and Lloyd are both faculty members in Lehigh's Department of Religion Studies (the Religion part) and Bill is the former Financial Aid Director at Lehigh (the cash part). Their musical interests span the music of the late 40s through to contemporary folk. Playing a mix of covers and original tunes, Religion & Cash performs mostly in the local Bethlehem, PA area including the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission's Sculpture Garden Concert series, various Lehigh University events, First Night Bethlehem and Christkindlmarkt. In August 2009, they played Bethlehem's Musikfest for the seventh straight year.
