In an era of hip hop when materialism and gimmicks have become the norm, it is refreshing to see an artist with substance, character and originality. Hailing from Edmonton, Canada is Rellik, one of the prairies most promising prospects. Co-founder of one of Edmonton’s longest running rap group, 118, he has been performing live and recording tracks for nearly a decade. From his high energy shows, captivating hooks and in your face rhyme style, Rellik, continues to leave audiences and listeners anticipating more. With Rellik's long awaited debut solo LP, "Mighty Mouth", scheduled for release in Spring 2009 on indie label, New Leaf Entertainment, he promises to take Canadian hip hop to another level.
Rellik has combined his tried and true underground formula, with a more commercially viable sound. "I basically got tired of selling a thousand units here and a thousand there. So I came to realize I needed to change my formula a bit. My personal goal on this one is to at least go gold in Canada." With the help of his regions top producers, his goal in sight is definitely within reach. Although he is of Aboriginal and Caucasian descent, Rellik seldom writes about either, feeling even that has become a gimmick in some of today’s hip hop music. He states, "I used to write native conscience material years ago but I felt I needed to write material that the average hip hop listeners could enjoy regardless of their ethnic background."
Rellik has opened up for some of today’s top rap artists, Young Buck, the Game and Kardinal Offishall. As well as some of his childhood mentors, Run DMC , Casual and Hieroglyphics. He also performed at world class sporting events and cross Canada. Rellik has one goal this time, "UNITS MAN!" He explains, "I need to reach out to more people and that means pushing more and more units." He continues, "Of course I'd love to ink a deal with one of the majors but at this point I'd settle for a strong distribution. With strong distribution I could let my current label handle the marketing and still sell units in big numbers."
