RELEASE NO. #06-42 December 1, 2006 JPAC TEAMS RETURN FROM LAOS AND CAMBODIA

HICKAM AFB, HAWAII – Five JPAC recovery teams and one investigation returned to Hawaii last week after conducting missions in Laos and Cambodia. Three recovery teams excavated sites in Savannakhet Province, Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic, connected to three cases involving missing Americans from the Vietnam War. The teams obtained material evidence and possible human remains.

In the same province, an investigation team followed leads, interviewed witnesses and surveyed suspected loss locations relating to dozens of other cases. This was the 96th Joint Field Recovery conducted in Laos.

Two separate JPAC recovery teams excavated sites in the Kingdom of Cambodia linked to two cases involving missing Americans from the Vietnam War. The teams recovered material evidence during their missions. This was the 36th Joint Field Recovery in Cambodia.

JPAC Central Identification Laboratory scientists will now analyze all newly acquired material evidence and possible human remains in an effort to account for the missing Americans associated with the Laotian sites. Additionally, JPAC intelligence analysts will scrutinize the information obtained by the investigation team to schedule future recoveries and identifications.

Both JFAs were 33 days in duration.

News Release

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 1294-06

December 19, 2006

-----------------------------------
Soldiers Missing In Action From Vietnam War are Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of three U.S. servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are Capt. Herbert C. Crosby, of Donalsonville, Ga.; Sgt. 1st Class Wayne C. Allen, of Tewksbury, Mass.; and Sgt. 1st Class Francis G. Graziosi, of Rochester, N.Y.; all U.S. Army. Burial dates and locations are being set by their families.
Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

On Jan. 10, 1970, these men were returning to their base at Chu Lai, South Vietnam aboard a UH-1C Huey helicopter. Due to bad weather, their helicopter went down over Quang Nam Province. A search was initiated for the crew, but no sign of the helicopter or crew was spotted.

In 1989, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (S.R.V.) gave to U.S. specialists 25 boxes containing the remains of the U.S. servicemen related to this incident. Later that year, additional remains and Crosby's identification tag were obtained from a Vietnamese refugee.

Between 1993 and 1999, joint U.S./S.R.V. teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), conducted three investigations in Ho Chi Minh City and two investigations in Quang Nam-Da Nang Province (formerly Quang Nam Province). A Vietnamese informant in Ho Chi Minh City told the team he knew where the remains of as many as nine American servicemen were buried. He agreed to lead the team to the burial site. In 1994, the team excavated the site and recovered a metal box and several bags containing human remains, including those of these three soldiers. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of the remains.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/ or call (703) 699-1169.

I'm sure you heard the news my friend of the Marine SGT who covered a gernade and absorbed the blast. The DOD denied the Medal of Honor. He saved members of his unit for sure but denied the Medal of Honor. God Bless him, his family and the troops. Amen.

Farewell Marine ~

The combat boots are empty
and finally they're still,
They're set carefully at attention,
they've marched up their last hill.

The rifle, too, is silent now
and unwaveringly erected,
Holding up the well-worn helmet
of the Marine it once protected.

One by one his comrades
somberly draw near,
Each raising one last salute
unashamed to shed a tear;

A time-honored tribute,
dating back to days of old,
As a reverent memorial
a stirring image to behold.

It bears witness to the bond
of a brotherhood of men,
The kind who only come along
every now and then.

These men who pass will carry on,
they've a mission to complete,
For our Country they will fiercely fight,
our enemies they'll defeat.

But in his heart after this,
no Marine will be the same,
A hero is now known to him,
and bears his buddy's name.

Wherever duty takes him,
whatever battles he may fight,
Never will he forget the friend
who gave his life for what is right.

Finally, the bugle sounds
Taps is softly played,
Time to say farewell, and say
a prayer for the sacrifices made.

This day the names of those who died
will be added to the List,
They will forever be remembered,
and will undeniably be missed.

Next time you see a proud Marine
in that uniform he wears,
Know his heart is strong and true
please keep him in your prayers.

He lives by a vow to protect and defend
no matter what the cost,
But to every Marine, it carries a name...
his buddy who was lost.

As I stumble through this life, help me to create more laughter than tears. Never let me become so indifferent, that I will fail to see the wonder in the eyes of a child. Never let me forget that my total effort is to cheer people, make them forget, at least momentarily, the unpleasantness in their lives. and in my final moment, may I hear You whisper: "When you made My people smile, you made Me smile.

Freedom is not Free...
Nor has is ever been. There is always sacrifices made in obtaining it... as there is... in maintaining it. These sacrifices are most often made by those who serve in uniform... and... as well as those who love them.

NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN AND EVER HONORED... IN REMEMBRANCE, IN THOUGHTS, AND IN PRAYERS...

Those who served,
Those who are serving today,
Those that came home... and those that didn’t.

And... always

The loved ones at home...
