Si Renata Rosa est née à São Paulo, l’état du Pernambouc est devenu l’une de ses principales sources d’inspiration. Dès son adolescence, elle fréquente les villages de l’embouchure du fleuve São Francisco où elle apprend à chanter le samba de coco, un chant d’appel et de réponse et le toré, un type de polyphonie inspirée des Indiens. Plus tard, elle s’initie au maracatú rural, l’une des traditions du carnaval du Pernambouc et au cavalo-marinho où elle devient l’une des rares femmes à jouer de la rabeca, un violon rural. Renata Rosa a fait de sa voix un véritable instrument qu’elle développe au contact des traditions du monde entier. Le Nordeste et son fabuleux folklore sont un prétexte à une invention musicale moderne où le travail de la voix trouve une place de choix.
La voix est bien sûr l’instrument privilégié de Renata Rosa qui se passionne pour le chant féminin en général. Son univers ne se limite pas au Nordeste brésilien et sa passion s’étend à l’ensemble des musiques du monde avec une préférence pour le chant indien et arabe. Sans attache fixe, sa seule maison est la musique telle une tente où elle convierait rencontres éphémères avec celles de toujours. Des brincadeiras nordestines (terme portugais qui désigne les traditions qui mélangent musique et théâtre et où le public est avant tout acteur. On entend par là le cavalo-marinho, le samba de coco, le maracatu rural, etc) aux chants hongrois ou pakistanais, Renata Rosa ne cesse d’écouter et de chanter. Son monde, entre global et local, n’est jamais uniforme car tout est prétexte à création et re-création.
Avec plus de 50 concerts en France et en Europe rien que sur l’année 2005, associés à cinq ans de route dans les festivals et les clubs, Renata Rosa a eu le temps de peaufiner son spectacle, de souder son groupe et de se constituer un public fidèle. C’est tout naturellement qu’elle se consacre à son nouvel album. Plus que la diva du Pernambouc, Renata Rosa s’inscrit d’emblée sur l’échiquier fort disputé des belles voix des musiques du monde. Son travail marqué par son influence brésilienne transcende les particularismes. L’universalité de sa voix de femme est destinée à toucher un large public.
NOUVEAU SPECTACLE trio ou quintet
Ses prochaines compositions auront pour Pierre Fondamentale l’univers des chants sinueux de la Jurema Sagrada (tradition „magique“ religieuse issue du syncrétisme des pratiques indiennes indigènes du Brésil et des apports des religions africaines), mais aussi le coco, dont elle explore diverses facettes, aux travers des chants de maîtres ou dans l’aspect ludique des fêtes et du quotidien des sambas de coco, ainsi que la ciranda. Le travail de la voix sera prépondérant notamment sous la forme épurée de polyphonies vocales.

While Renata Rosa was born in São Paulo, the state of Pernambouc has become one of her main sources of inspiration. As early as her teenage years, she would visit the villages found at the mouth of the river São Francisco, learning to sing the coco samba there, a song of requests and responses, and the toré, a sort of polyphony inspired by the Indians. Later on she learnt the rural maracatú, one of the traditions of the Pernambouc carnival and the cavalo-marinho for which she became one of the few women to play the rabeca, a rural violin. Renata Rosa has made her voice into a veritable instrument enriched by every contact with the traditions of the world. The Nordeste and its amazing folklore are the pretext for modern musical innovation in which the voice takes pride of place.
Clearly the voice is Renata Rosa’s preferred instrument, and female singing as a whole her particular passion. Her world is not limited to the Brazilian Nordeste and her enthusiasm embraces music from around the globe with a special penchant for Indian and Arabic singing. With no fixed abode, her only home is the music, a tent to which she invites both fleeting and long-standing encounters. Ranging from brincadeiras from the Nordeste (a Portuguese name given to traditions that involve both theatre and music and in which the spectator is above all actor. These include the cavalo-marinho, the coco samba, the rural maracatú etc.) to Hungarian or Pakistani songs, Renata Rosa never stops listening and singing. Her world, somewhere between the global and the local, is never the same, as any excuse is good for creating and re-creating.
With over 50 concerts performed in France and in Europe during 2005 alone, alongside five years of touring in festivals and clubs, Renata Rosa has had time to refine her stage show, strengthen her band and build up a loyal following. It is time for her to work on her new album. Much more than the diva of Pernambouc, from the outset Renata Rosa has occupied on of the highly sought-after places amongst the most beautiful voices of world music. Her work, with its Brazilian influences, extends far beyond national distinctions. The universal nature of her voice is destined to reach a wide audience.
