Renee's Interests
General
cats, music, movies, art, books, crochet, football, coffee. It's impossible to distill a person into simple categories. I love all animals - I grew up with dogs, and miss having one around (but I have cats now). I love modern, abstract art. I enjoy art shows at SF/F cons, but much of it doesn't appeal to me (with some exceptions). Movies: I hate horror, but I love suspense. I like a movie that makes me cry, because of its authenticity, not because I'm being manipulated to cry. My dad gave me my love of football, and now that he's gone, it's a way for me to feel that I am with him.
Music
Queen! Freddie Mercury was an unbelievable talent, and taken way too soon! Beethoven is my muse; opera, classic rock, Leonard Cohen; Jeff Buckley was so full of life and passion, also taken way too soon. Nick Cave speaks straight to my soul; Enigma.
Movies
L. A. Story, Last of the Mohicans, A Room with a View, Strictly Ballroom, Legally Blonde, Moulin Rouge, Bliss (the Australian film from 1985, not the American thriller), Phantom of the Opera
Television
I like television that pushes the envelope or doesn't hold back. Some shows I enjoy are Real Time with Bill Maher, Daily Show, Colbert Report, Ugly Betty, LOST, Nip/Tuck, Entourage, House. I'm also an HGTV junkie. And anytime football is on, I'm watching it! I love the passion of college football, and I'm a huge Miami Hurricanes fan. On the pro side, I love my Miami Dolphins, through good times and bad.
Books
Some of my recent favorite books include House of the Spirits; One Hundred Years of Solitude, Life of Pi, The Book Thief, Love in the Time of Cholera, anything by Sharon Shinn. I read widely in a variety of genres. Like other forms of drama and story telling, I love authenticity, and as long as a work of fiction has it, I'll probably find something to like about it. I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, but because of my training as an historian, authenticity is critical. The work of Kage Baker is amazing in that respect.
Heroes
Anyone who is honest with me, because I find true honesty to be rare.
About me: I am both simple and complicated. I am intelligent, funny, honest, creative, compassionate, loyal, impulsive, quick to anger, but also quick to forgive.
I have many different interests: art, books, movies, music (my Ph. D. is in Musicology, and I wrote my dissertation on German Opera of the 1920s, starting with the end of Expressionism going through until the rise of Naziism in the early 1930s). I get bored easily, but I have lots that I like to do, so I can usually find something to keep me entertained.
I'm also not the person that many think I am: I'm much more shy and private than people think. I also have a more fragile ego than most people think and am easily hurt, yet I'm very good at covering it up.
When someone is lucky enough to have my affections, there is no other. Loyalty is important to me - I give it unconditionally, and I hope I get it in return.
With me, you'll always know where you stand. I'm not perfect by any stretch - I know I can sometimes be bossy and stubborn, impatient, annoying as hell and a little bitchy, but I work hard to be the best person that I can be. Sometimes I screw up really big, and when I do, I work hard to correct my error (I never set out to hurt anyone intentionally, but it's just something we all do). I am blessed by better friends than I could ever deserve, and I work hard to be deserving of them.
I'm a night owl who has to get up early to go to work, and that is a daily struggle that often puts me at crosshairs with conflicting desires. I love Diet Pepsi and Craig Ferguson.
And I love my cats. I have 4 cats, and 2 of them have serious medical conditions: Sam is diabetic and has intestinal lymphoma (diagnosed April 2007) and Kitsu has dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) that was not diagnosed until he went into congestive heart failure (CHF) Sept. 2007. (DCM is a very rare heart condition in cats, and in Kitsu's case the cause is most likely genetic.) Happily Ginger and Charlie, my two girls, are very healthy.
Who I'd like to meet: Honest, intelligent, thoughtful people. Kindred spirits. People with a great sense of humor. People who can laugh at themselves when the occasion arises, but who also know when to be serious. I especially love creative types - musicians, artists, writers - because I am one myself.
