The History of REQUIEM
1991-Present
REQUIEM was formed by Brutal Berry Ruffin of Las Vegas Nevada in 1991 (Nov/Dec) and began as a 3 piece, 2 guitars and drums. They remained a three piece until 1993, then added a bassist. Requiem stayed as a 4 man group until 1999. Dropped 1 guitarist and became a 3 piece again.
Requiem began touring in 1995. Their first touring roadshows were in Bullhead City Arizona, St. George Utah, Albuquerque New Mexico, and California. In 1997, Requiem toured with their "Grave" album and pressed its sales. They next played at the Expo of the Extreme in Chicago Illinois.
Requiem participated in a battle of the unsigned bands soon after and won 1st prize, a free recording of their next album, "Dawn of Souls". 5 months later while still on the Grave tour, Requiem recorded another album, "Christ Has Risen". Once home in Vegas from the tour, Paul Speckmann of MASTER booked Requiem another tour.
On this next tour, Requiem released their 5th album, "U$$A" (United States of a Socialist America). With this release they then did a mini tour with LEPROSY (Mexico). Also a few shows in Las Vegas, 5 shows in California, 1 show in Chicago (plus a few shows with JOHNNY VOMIT in Chicago). Also played with IMMORAL INTENT (Bellingham Washington), KRABATHOR (USA and Mexico), DISGORGE (Mexico), ANARCHUS (Mexico), and STONEAGE (El Paso Texas).
To this date, REQUIEM has over 300 Touring Roadshows coast to coast in the US, 25 shows all throughout Mexico, and 5 shows in Peru and South America. It is there that they recorded Volume 6 with John Capcha from HADEZ, the oldest Peruvian metal band.
In September 2001, just a couple of days after the terrorist attacks, Requiem was invited by Commander Fidel Castro to play and tour in Cuba (He liked the U$$A Cover art, no joke!). Requiem was, and still I believe IS, the ONLY American Metal band to have ever been able to play on Cuban soil. Unfortunately, due to the promoters never holding up their end of the bargain, Requiem never made it much farther than the Cuban airport. People all over Cuba were awaiting this American metal band’s tour to their country, it was a very big deal over there (But, we were in La Habana anyway. a very nice country and very nice people!).
Since then, Requiem has toured all across the US. Booking shows and doing runs whenever we could. Playing crowded gigs, and dead ones. Playing for thousands, and for a few. Playing late, playing early, headlining, opening, and just doing anything and everything we could to spread the metal way of life, that is REQUIEM. We have supported pretty much every metal/thrash/deathmetal/blackmetal scene in the country, and played with hundreds of bands from all over!
Lock The Dead and Retrowar were released in more recent years, and are possibly the best of Requiems music to date (not counting upcoming unnamed Album 9)! Although all of our music is available for purchase anytime! We use CD Baby, and are currently working on getting ALL of our music tracks from ALL albums for purchase!
Tim Askin (Technical Tim), long time friend of the band and also a bass player, joined Berry and began working on more recent material after band members coming, leaving, and just having a hard time to find dedicated musicians. After a couple of years of no shows and no opportunities because of a lack of a drummer, Berry came across a young drummer from Missouri, emailed him, and within 2 minutes got a reply! It was like fate or something, after a couple of days Johnnie was undoubtedly the right guy! Tim had to leave the band early 2008 for personal reasons. We wish him the best. Not long after this, Samson (Berrys childhood friend!) joined and learned Bass for us after playing guitar for many years beforehand. A few short months later, Jeff moved back to his hometown to be with his family, Augie was tried out and played a few shows. He eventually couldn't keep up with things and stopped jamming. Due to a high lack of motivation and creativity from the guitarist, Requiem stopped playing and practicing altogether in mid 2008. Johnnie left the group shortly after to find bigger and better opportunities.
