Weekly sessions took place on Monday starting 8th September 2008 and running to 20th October 2008 at Kingston Youth Centre, 21a Beverley Road, Hull. Sessions ran 6.30pm-8.30pm, with a 30p entry fee to the Youth Centre.
Young people took the chance to work with professional musicians Alistair Wilson and Donna Smith and other young people in one-to-one and small group settings developing their music skills. The sessions were for young people aged 14-19 from Hull who wanted to develop their music skills. There was a DJ / Mc group and a singer/songwriter/musician group, but any musicial style could apply to join in.
There was a maximum of 12 places which were all filled with young people taking this great chance to work with professionals on developing their music goals. Sessions also included songwriting and recording.
The sessions were followed by a mini-tour to other youth centres for mini-gigs and demonstrations.

The Hull Youth Music Mentors have worked with Alistair Wilson and Donna Smith, trainined community musicians, and professional sound engineer Alan Jones, to build on their existing musical experience, including developing performances and running workshops for other young people in different youth centres as well as recording and creating music in a professional studio.

Pilot Project 2007-2008 and Phase 2 June-October 2008
Youth Music Mentors is run in Hull by Music4U, the Humber Region Youth Music Action Zone. The project supports young people aged 14-19 who would benefit from being mentored by a professional musician.
Youth Music Mentors is a national mentoring programme which aims to improve the life chances of young people in challenging circumstances through music based mentoring. Funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), via Youth Music, the programme helps get young people involved in music making and provides one-to-one and group mentoring sessions with peers, community musicians and music industry professionals.
The Pilot Project and Phase 2 in Hull were one of 14 national schemes being co-ordinated by Youth Music on behalf of the DCMS. Now 17 schemes exist across England, including the continuation of Phase 3 of the scheme in Hull.
A number of organisations have supported the project locally as part of a delivery group for the pilot project which included Hull City Arts and Hull Youth Development Service, Hull Music Service, Hull University, Hull College, Hull Youth Offending Team as well as the community music organisations Humbersound, Expressive Arts Centre at Preston Road NDC, 10x10 Productions, Big Hand Productions and Nova Studios.
A development group also met for the Pilot Project to look at taking the project beyond the Pilot Project and rolling it out to other areas in the Humber region.
Since Phase 2 a small team have continued to take the project forward including Hull City Council's City Arts and Youth Development Service, Nova Studios and 10x10 Productions.
Details of the Pilot Project and Phase 2 can be found on this site as an archive of the work so far. The Basement Studio is now running free open access sessions in Bristol again. These sessions are for young people at all levels of music interest and experience. There are two areas: Live music – with drum kit, bass, electric or acoustic guitars, keyboard and mics; Urban music – with music tech, DJing and MCing. There are 3x 40 min slots in each area every session. Each area is run by a tutor who will talk to you about what you want to do - and help you do it. There are also youth workers who can help you get info and advice on anything you need to know about and are generally up for a chat. They can also help you get certificates such as National Youth Achievement Awards or Arts Awards – either for the music you make or for other projects. Call the Basement (0117) 934 9013 for more info – or just turn up. We’re at the Unicorns, Colston Street (next to Colston Hall), on Tues and Thurs eves, 7.30-10pm. When you’re standing in front of Colston Hall there’s an archway directly to the right. Walk through there, make for the double brown doors (next to the bins) – through them and downstairs to the Unicorns.
