Resurrection Rags's Interests
General
i have been resurrecting used clothing since the 1980's when i realized i had nothing to wear after my first pregnancy, and no money. I took the clothes in my closet and "deconstructed" them way before it was popular and when i wore them out people began asking "where can i get that?" I am also an artist , i paint in acrylic on canvas, and do collages,i make small quilts, i write poetry, songs, and I love my blog, and my journal, i am currently working on an art journal maybe to publish.
Music
i love music -damien rice, kt tunstall, tori amos, grateful dead, bob dylan, cowboy junkies, LEONARD COHEN!!!! "he's my man" Indian tantric, native american, drumming, chanting, and flutes, techno -trance, egyptian, bellydance music from any country.too many to list all
The movies which have inspired my work and my art are, so numerous, I love period pieces with elaborate costumes, edwardian, victorian, and fantasy--Titanic, The Cat's Meow, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Frida, The Hours, Great expectations ,(i love the story and the art work) What Dreams May Come, Camille Claudelle, i could just keep going......movies about artists, The movie "Pret-a-porter" inspired me in the 90's in that it gave me an idea of the rediculousness, of the fashion industry, and there was a statistic which stuck in my head, and i can't remember the numbers now, but the tonage of clothing, and waste material that goes into the landfill every year from the clothing manufacturing industry is outrageous, not to mention the things people throw away because they are no longer the trend......
Heroes
In the fashion industry,my heros are---Betsy Johnson, Matthew Williamson, Koos van den Akker, Natalie Channin, who started, "Project Alabama", Mara Hoffman, Anna Sui, a local, enigmatic, woman named Elle, who gifted me my first box of vintage slips, 1940's bias cut nightgowns, which i wore as dresses, and victorian bloomers, cotton, silk satin, and cotton voile! and several beautiful bed jackets, she was my first real inspiration, she was deconstructing in the 1970's making the truly lush delicious hippie clothes in Miami like Janis use to wear, lots of purple velvet and blue satin!!!!! and her friend Phyliss who owned a shop called Chelsea Morning, in Coconut Grove when it was the hippie, artist mecca, of Miami, almost everything in her store was white cotton, or gauzey, victorian inspired, lacey, silky, satiney, wonderful wonderful stuff,(can you tell i liked it? )
my Grandmother and Grandfather, they always had their car trunk full of fabrics, and both of them made clothing. Gustav Klimt, Georgia Okeef, Freida Kahlo, My big sister, who has become an independant and beautiful woman, my children who love me truly for who i am,.... I have too many heros, aren't we all heros to each other?
