About me:

Why communities matter

There is a whole class of public artists whose obscurity enables them to have free expression unhindered by the expectations of public art as shiny, conceptual and costly, carried out from academic perspectives, independent of local community sensitivities.

I have delivered a successful art project when I have enabled people to express themselves through their creation and construction of utilitarian objects that convey meaning and value to themselves or others within their culture or community. That makes my art a genre of folk expression – or folk art.

Utilitarian in my particular case means the public realm and practical things, such as seating, signage, paving, waste bins, play equipment, picnic tables and street furniture. After landscaping – the canvas - utilitarian components are added - designed and composed with untrained people living within the local community.

This, I believe, is really Folk Art. Anonymous folk art at its purest, free for the looking. Because everything involved in folk art reveals much about the essential values or characteristics of a society, this includes re-claiming materials and ecological focus, thus folk art is often studied by historians and anthropologists as an artistic window into what a society was like. With folk art in the public realm we are creating historical artefacts.

These projects are contributing to history at the same time as generating social capital for the future. They are mobilising the imaginations of the community – and imagination, in this electronically manifested world, is one area that remains intensely personal.

These are some of the art projects I have worked on over recent times.

wishing U an easy monday morning;)
    ..love what U are doing!!

we..ve got a nice little group called
    " The Earth loving artists"..

-Artist materials are not often environmentally friendly and it takes extra effort to look for materials, techniques and methods to do the right thing.

How to balance the love for beauty, the arts, and the environment? Whether you are a painter, sculptor, photographer, jeweller or craftsperson, come share your knowledge!-

If you have walked in the heart of the Green wood
and have bathed in the light of its living force
    remember what you have felt;
and whenever you pass a tree
whether it stands alone in a wilderness of human making
or in the depth of woodland,
give a moment of your time to listen to its voice.
For in many parts of the land the trees are dying
only the hearts that know something of the true wisdom can save them. (Anon)

Hello Rob, your art looks fabulous now get on with that Green Man!! Nice to meet you.

Si usted ha paseado por el centro del bosque verde
y se ha bañado en la luz de su fuerza viva
    recuerde lo que usted ha sentido;

I love art that connects me to the artist - that provides insight and has more than one superficial layer of significance. I like art that tells a story or represents something significant.

I agree there is much art that is stagnant and lifeless, but I am ever amazed at the innovative artistic expression of people as I make my way through the arts world. On a regular basis I run across artwork that leaves me breathless and moves me deeply.

You have a style that resonates with me. Consider me a new fan.

    Be well,

Mad Tom Flint is that you?
I thought we had lost you to that band of cut throats and slit purses.
How are you you old scallywag? Still hanging out with Pugwash and his merry band of accordian playing fiddlers?
