Meddy Gerville
Pianist, songwriter, composer and singer Meddy Gerville, has been making Reunion Island vibrate with the sound of his maloya jazz for almost ten years.
He has worked with musicians such as Sixun bass player Michel Alibo, Dominique Di Piazza, Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Matthew Garrison or Danyèl Waro... Meddy mixes jazz with the music of his native island.
This unique fusion between jazz and maloya has progressively taken him into the “higher sphere of the big boys”. Don’t miss it!

René Lacaille
Born in 1946, René Lacaille is the master of the spicy séga rhythms of Reunion Island. In his 20’s, René abandoned the accordion for the guitar, and formed the now-legendary group Caméléon, the true inventors of Electric Maloya.
Rene’s Sax Séga would prove to be a hit on the francophone market, and is still featured on Air France’s musical programs. In 1979, René moved to France and continued his musical progression in jazz and fusion. In his 1996 release Aster, René draws on all of his preferred influences.
To mark his return to accordion and the hot séga and maloya rhythms of his homeland, René recorded Patampo with Danyel Waro and with Rene’s percussionists Joel Gonthier and Bernard Marka.
Since meeting Bob Brozman in 1999, René has toured with him in Europe, South Africa, and Canada. René continues to compose new music at an astounding rate.
In 2002, René and Bob released Digdig (meaning “tickles”) on World Music Network. It became an international hit, reaching 3 in Europe’s World Music charts. René and Bob have toured extensively and repeatedly throughout Europe, Canada, East Africa and Australia. René’s talents continue to introduce him into new countries each year, helping to span his reach from Europe and Africa to Canada, Brazil, China, and the USA. René’s second album for World Music Network, Mapou, has been released in 2005 to great acclaim. His new album Cordeon Kameleon is to be released in October 2008.

Baster
Baster is a band that has always known how to fit its composition to the music it wanted to play. Its leader, Thierry Gauliris has always struggled to stand up for his music since 1983 and the birth of his association "Mouvman Kiltirel Basse-Terre".
Baster’s style, halfway between maloya and séga, is very influenced by reggae music. Thierry Gauliris is a charismatic leader who knows how to captivate the audience. Its live performance mixes sophisticated tracks and jam sessions during which Baster demonstrates its talent.
Baster has released many albums that have been very well received in Reunion Island. Its album Kaf Gong Reggae was recorded in the famous Tuff Gong studios in Jamaica and released in 2002, establishing Baster as a band that music professionals could not ignore anymore.
2008 is a very special year for the band: after 25 years of playing music and with a new album in progress (recorded, again, in Jamaica), Baster announces a definitely “reggae” record and clearly aims for exportation. Production team has notably worked with main artists such as Serge Gainsbourg, Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys….
From January 2009, Baster will travel through Europe to promote this release.

Salem Tradition
Born and raised in the "Camélias" district, a humble neighbourhood of the city of Saint-Denis, La Reunion, Christine Salem comes from a new generation of female performers who sings Maloya. She wrote her first songs at the age of 12 and, mixing maloya, sega and blues, she started singing in the streets with friends.
Initially performing various musical genres as a backup singer, Christine gave herself very quickly to her passion and sang full-time. She then decided to launch out in a musical career by forming her own group, Salem Tradition, in 1997.
She subtly mixes the musics of Indian Ocean with African rhythms, using local traditional instruments like "rouleur" (the bass drum made of a wooden barrel covered with a cow skin), "kayamb", "pikèr" (a big bamboo stick), West African drums dundum, and djembe.
Surrounded by a vocalist and three percussionists, Christine Salem chants with an almost raucous but utterly bewitched voice, an inspired Maloya rooted in the Afro-Madagascan and Indian Ocean heritage.
Lyrics of her songs contain the evolution of life with its joys, its sorrows and its revolts in the spoken Creole or Malagasy dialects, Comorian or Swahili, the inheritance of her ancestors.
Her last album, Fanm, released on Cobalt, received a critical acclaim. She will appear in Africolor Festival in december 2008.

Lindigo
« Once you know where you come from, you know where to go ». This is Lindigo’s motto.
Lindigo is a maloya band created in 1999 and is at the moment considered as the flagship of Reunion Island’s newest musical scene. The band is known for throwing itself into amazing stage performances combining the instrumental tradition of maloya and Malagasy polyphony.
Lindigo is a group of musicians of Malagasy origins, gathered around Harry Araste, its charismatic composer-songwriter and singer.
Lindigo music is influenced by “servis kabaré”, the ritual ceremony that honours ancestors and, by tradition, comes very close to trance.
In 2004, the band toured the French Alliances of Mauritius, Madagascar and East Africa and released its first album called Misaotra Mama ("Thank you Mummy"), receiving critical acclaim in Reunion Island. Five thousand copies of the second album called Zanatany (“Child from the earth”) have already been sold.
The next album, Lafrikindmada is currently being recorded, for a scheduled release in 2009 on Cobalt.

Gramoun Sello
Gramoun Sello was born in St Louis, Reunion Island on April 18th 1949. He grew up in the yard of a sugar factory called “Etablissement du Gol” in the south of the island. As a young boy, he worked in the sugar cane fields of the property, which kept him away from school. Gramoun Sello was born in Maloya and grew up in “servis kabaré” as he says himself, always feeling like he already knew maloya.
In 1980, he settles in St Pierre, where he will create the legendary “Troupe Roséda” with a group of friends.
Retired from playing live in 2000 after 20 years of maloya, he comes back on stage in 2005 with a new album The Legend of maloya, a live recording done with the support of Stephane Grondin (ethnomusicologist and chairman of Maloyallstars Production).
With is exceptional, powerful and soft voice, Gramoun Sello speaks about our daily life, about our joys and sorrows in a matchless and juicy way.
The comeback of this master of maloya is a real event that we invite you to discover urgently on his new record Ampélémouné released this year.
You have certainly seen Gramoun Sello and the Maloya All Stars perform at the latest edition of Babel Med Music in Marseille and we hope that you have enjoyed it. Maloyallstars Production urges you to you to book Gramoun Sello, the last Maloya’s Legend for your next event or festival.

Ziskakan
During the late seventies, in Reunion Island, poets and musicians rallied in favour of the Creole language and of Reunion Island’s culture. The Ziskakan association was born in this context in 1979, at a group of friends’ instigation, carried away by Gilbert Pounia.
Traditionally, it is in "kabar" (Malagasy word “Kabary” meaning assembly) that maloya could be heard, felt and played with its instruments of predilection: the “rouleur” (a horse-drum that one overlaps), the “bobre” (a musical arc), the “kayamb” (a box made of sugar kane flowers sterms which contains seeds, that one shakes flat - this movement gives birth to the 6-8, the rhythmic signature of the maloya).
The latter, between a stolen humanity and a possible happiness, is used as an identity. From this blues, Gilbert Pounia will establish his creation, imaging in the course of the stages and recordings, a contemporary maloya fed by the virtues of the insular Creole culture: a cocktail of interbreeding African, European, Indian, Chinese and mixed-race descendants.
His talent is recognized and he won 2 Kora Awards in 1997 and the Césaire de la Musique award for Best Group of 2007 for his last CD Banjara. Are you ready to meet a rare poet, singer and musician?

Tiana
Tiana draws with happiness in the heritage of her island to build a universe which puts in the light the very best of her native country: Madagascar. As an accomplished composer and performer, it is on stage that Tiana’s art is revealed: her dynamism, charisma and presence have always touched and moved the audience.
She has received the "Gasitsara award" in Madagascar for "Best Artist of the year" 1996. In 1998, Tiana was elected “woman of the year” in Culture, by the Malagasy press. Since 1995, she has performed on many stages in Indian Ocean Area and to Europe (The Olympia and Babel Med Music in 2008).
Her last album, Ibesafira resounds of its Malagasy roots: mixing modern and traditional, its music is a very original melting pot which comes to life both on stage and on CD.

Apolonia
Bruno Escyle, founder and leader of band Apolonia, is passionately native of Reunion and resolutely Séga. But he composes as he lives, open minded and turned towards “the outside”. As a result, he has collaborated with other artists of the Indian Ocean (Tiana of Madagascar and Gerard Louis of Mauritius)… With seventeen years of experience behind them, many shows in Reunion Island or abroad and ten records that have been very successful, Apolonia became a renouned band and a very popular one. From segas to lovesongs, many Reunionese have danced at least once to Apolonia’s music, or dreamed of the band’s success. Bruno’s favourite songwriting themes are Love, everyday life in Reunion Island and more serious issues like slavery or consumerism.
Apolonia presents lively and accomplished shows, containing ségas, creole love songs, and tracks that groove to “other” rhythms. The last album Mon l’Univers brings new and original acoustic textures, without forsaking the origins of Séga.
