The band // The story
In 2009 Jens Fuglsang & Rêve Bohème consist of Jens Fuglsang (vocal & leadguitar), Robert Pilgaard (rhythmguitar) and Jesper Riis (bass).
Through the years the band have performed in many different line-ups and musical settings. Their fusion between the Nordic and South-European traditions always creates a unique musical universe which can be heard on their previous three albums Django Jalousie 2002, Django’s Dream 2005 and Best of Rêve Bohème 2007 (Hot Club Records) These albums also features Kasper Fredholm on sax and Morten Ravn on bass. Jens Fuglsang & Rêve Bohème is releasing their new vocal cd Café Django on Calibrated Records in 2009.
The band debutised at the famous gypsy jazz restaurant Bistro d'Eustache in Paris, 1999. Since then they've been touring and playing at clubs and festivals in Germany, Holland, France, England, Greece, Norway,Sweden and Finland. Jens Fuglsang & Rêve Bohème have played and performed with international gypsy jazz artists like Robin Nolan, Andreas Öberg, Basily, Paulus Schäfer, Angelo Debarre, Dorado Schmidt and danish Django-inspired musicians like Kristian Jørgensen, Jacob Fischer, Pierre Dørge..and many others.
Imagine a long night at a café in Paris where Django Reinhardt bumps into a young Frank Sinatra and they start to jam! This scenario could be a good way of describing the music of Jens Fuglsang & Rêve Bohème in 2009 – hot and swinging Vocal Gypsy Jazz.
Everybody in France knows of the fabled gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, who with his unorthodox guitar playing and bohemian lifestyle, became a living legend in Paris in the thirties. His music and spirit still lives on and with a repertoire of their own songs, Django Reinhardt tunes and jazz standards Jens Fuglsang & Rêve Bohème have created their own "Vocal Gypsy Jazz"- sound, based on the motto: "Dig into tradition to find something new".
The history of the name:
The band Rêve Bohème made its debut in the winter of 1998 in the well-known gypsy jazz restaurant Bistro d'Eustache in Paris. Why this happened in Paris and not in Copenhagen is a long story - so here is the short version.
In 1998 Jens Fuglsang was in Paris to by a guitar and at the same time do some research about Django Reinhardt for a thesis that he was writing. Because of this he had been approached to give a lecture about Django Reinhardt in the Danish Church in Paris. Instead of just talking a bit and playing a few records Jens decided to put together a band in order to play the music live. In addition to the "music lecture" the group managed to play two dates at the Bistro D'Eustache and the Café Atmosphere - both of which are well known for their Gypsy jazz. The trip was great success and during long trip home Rêve Bohème decided to become a "real" band. The name, which means the dream of the gypsy, is taken from an old French waltz written by the accordionist, Jo Privat.
