Avenged Sevenfold formed in 1999 in Southern California. Formed by lead singer M. Shadows, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance and then bassist Matt Wendt. Shadows approached close friend The Reverend Tholomew Plague to join them. His reply was he'd only join the band because they're friends, originally Rev was slided to play for Shadows' former band 'Successful Failure'; which didn't work out. Next to be asked to play with them would be Synyster Gates, who at the time was too good to join. It was only after Avenged Sevenfold recorded their first album 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet' that Gates had to decide to join. The first track off of 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet' was rerecorded with Gates on lead guitar. Avenged has had four bass players, Matt Wendt (1999-??), Justin Sane [Not Anti-Flag Justin Sane] (1999-2001), Dameon Ash (2001-2002), and Johnny Christ (2002-present day).

The A7X abbriviation was thought of by Zacky Vengeance; the A standing for Avenged, the 7 standing for Seven and the X being the fold. It stuck and is used worldwide.
