  • Bio

“The Reverend has been writing music for many years. His influences vary. When he was growing up, his parent’s stereo played old country, 60's pop and Newfie music. As a youngster, he was into rock, punk and metal. James Hetfield and Robert Plant were people he tried to emulate as a singer. What people didn't know is that he was a closet hillbilly. The Reverend once told me, "I remember the first time I heard Copperhead Road by Steve Earle or Georgia Satellites, Keep Your Hands to Yourself (still my karaoke favourite) and thought I was a misplaced southerner." His folks always loved Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash, George Jones and singers of that ilk and he would always sneak in a best of compilation from Columbia House records from all of the country classics. He did not like Simon and Garfunkel. When he started playing music in high school, rock bands were the only way to go. In his twenties, he recorded a grunge-esque record with Wenge and gigged extensively in and around Toronto. They recorded one album, "You Kick It, You Bought It". The Reverend was a screamer back then but was dabbling in twang and listening to more old country and americana without any ounce of shame. Then in 1997, he formed the Newtons with some friends and they put out "Buy 5, Get 1 Free". The Newtons were a Toronto mainstay for a few years but things still fizzled out. At this point, the Reverend was writing many songs that only saw his basement. "These songs smelled different", the Reverend told me in September 2010, "and I needed to find people who were on the fringe of rock." The Newtons disbanded in late 2000 and Luckyfool was born. The Reverend seemed to go through band members on a regular basis. The Reverend met Greg Shields through an ad in the back of local rag and a partnership was born. Luckyfool gigged and recorded extensively. Indeed the Reverend thought he had found his niche however in 2009, that too went the way of the alien bass guitar. You know the ones that looked like a boat paddle? During the recording of the full length Luckyfool album in 2007, Greg Shields introduced the Reverend to Lori Hirst and Dan Beeson. Greg Shields went his own way artistically although they still support one another. In late 2009, the Reverend discussed plans of recording the hillbilly record he had always dreamed of with Dan Beeson at Magnetic Sound and Lori Hirst who also produced the Luckyfool album. They hit a speedbump in 2010 after the Reverend was involved in nasty automobile accident but the recording was finished in the summer of 2010 with the assistance of walkers, canes and painkillers. So here it is in all its glory. The Reverend has always written songs about bad choices, debauchery and love. "The people in my songs are real and most of them were not born with a silver spoon in their mouth" he told me while sipping cheap scotch and torching a Captain Black on a dirt road somewhere south of Coboconk. The instrumentation on this recording differs greatly from anything the Reverend has ever recorded and he seems pleased. "It has taken me many years to get here, but this is finally me."
