Bio
ABOUT 'TWO DAYS' **** This album was recorded specifically as an LP. Vinyl LPs now available at REDEYE (Sydney), THORNBURY RECORDS (Melbourne). Distibution by http://www.onlybluesmusic.com/. Also available at http://jdlove.bandcamp.com/ **** TWO DAYS is the new album from Sydney based musician JD Love featuring ten new songs laced with blues, country, 60's pop & soul sounds. Recorded, as the title suggests, over 2 days at Atlantis Sound and with a fine band featuring Georgia Fields (JD's daughter) on piano, percussion, autoharp and backing vocals, Dave Bramble on bass, Matty Vehl on keys, Tim Coghill on drums and JD on guitar and vocals, TWO DAYS was recorded with 'old school' production values. with everybody in the studio, no overdubbing or multi-tracking, and mixed direct to two track. This approach to recording has delivered a refreshingly warm and honest sound that perfectly suits the songs and ethos. Georgia; as co-producer, found the musicians; Dave Bramble on bass, Matty Vehl on keys and Tim Coghill on drums. Georgia played piano, percussion, auto harp, and sang harmony vocals. JD wanted to record the album like the cassette recordings he and Georgia used to make, only this time with a bigger tape recorder. He also wanted to capture the sound of tape, which is a big part of 50s, 60s, and 70s records. A lot of engineers would have stepped back but, Dave McCluney understood and made it work. As requested he put everyone in the same room with no headphones, to achieve a natural balance. 48 hours later, 'Two Days' the album was complete. **** Reviews The focus was on creating a retro sound by recording live to tape, with the focus on the feel of the songs. It worked. This mixture of blues, country, pop and even a little folk is pure, heartfelt and compelling. Highlights include the first track, Love Made a Fool Out of Me, the pure country duet with Georgia, Love is a Train, Walking Away and Since You're Gone. It's an album full of loss, heartache and reflection – perfect for those times when you want to listen, feel and reflect. ONLY BLUES MUSIC JDMCD 1280 2 SUSAN JARVIS - C O U N T R Y M U S I C C A P I T A L N E W S D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 1 **** Nobody does harmonies better than family and Fields and Love blend vocals with effortless charm. Experienced engineer Dave McCluney nailed the bare bones feel. With the right speakers you'd swear the band was playing in your living room. There's not a lot of 'love gone right' in the track titles but it's far from depressing fare. Hammond laced Love Made A Fool Out Of Me' features a light touch of junk percussion. There's a couple of toe tappers and a dash of the dramatic on the fine duet 'Since you're gone'. The funky 'Let It Rain' was virtually recorded on the fly and tastes of polk salad with Vehl shining on Rhodes (I reckon TJW would love to have a go at this one). The closing track is warm and relaxed in a Graham Nash vein. Less is more and Love gives us plenty. JD was also a member of 80's band The Motivators and The Spaniards, both of whom enjoyed some success. In the 90's JD, like countless other musos was earning a living working on projects for other people and performing in various country, alt/country and cover bands. The songs he continued to write stayed safely filed away in a drawer. During this time, JD would regularly take off to central Western NSW with his daughter Georgia (the talented indie pop chanteuse Georgia Fields) with just a tent and sit out under the stars. Naturally, they would play and sing, sometimes recording themselves on cassette recorders. In 2002, under the name The Rev JD Love, JD released a self-titled 10 track album of his own songs using just guitar and vocals. In May 2011, JD found himself down in Melbourne for some gigs, so took the opportunity to look for a studio with a grand piano and tape machines that could deliver the sound he wanted for the new songs he had written. Daughter Georgia had just finished recording at Atlantis Sound and recommended Dave McCluney because "he's good and he's been around long enough to know tape". By mid-May, JD found himself in a recording studio in South Melbourne, not too far from where he did his first recording 37 years ago at AAV. -
