Reykjavik Orange (or just "Reyk" if it's too hard to spell!) blends sisters Claire and Gemma, a mildly abused piano, some delicious vocal harmonies, sarcastic humour, a bit of guitar and, surprisingly, a tuba. As self-proclaimed pioneers of the “quirky-circus-folk-pop” genre, Reyk will distract you with their delicate and intelligently crafted songs, while the melodic tuba lines seduce you and steal your heart, your devotion, and your hot dog.
Instrumentation is key to the Reykjavik Orange sound, with a particular emphasis on using harmony in a way that all instruments and voices have equal importance. Gemma and Claire love to sing together, and these vocal harmonies form the backbone of most of their music, but Reykjavik Orange are probably best known for their quirky but melodic use of tuba, which when combined with strong piano work can lend a very full sound to the acoustic duo.
Reyk launched their debut EP "Homespun" in February 2009. It's available now at Mills Records, Fremantle, and Junction Records, Fremantle.
