Se crea por el uso de tres tambores: tambor piano, tambor chico y tambor repique. El piano es el más grande en tamaño y el más bajo en afinación, es la base rítmica del Candombe y su función es similar a la de un contrabajo o bajo eléctrico. El chico es el más pequeño en tamaño y el más alto en afinación, oficia de péndulo rítmico de la cuerda. El tambor repique “adorna” el ritmo de Candombe con frases improvisadas. Cada uno de ellos es tocado con una mano abierta y un palo en la otra. La forma básica de la cuerda está integrada por estos tres tambores. _______________________________________________________________________ La forma más pura de Candombe se expone habitualmente los domingos en las calles de Montevideo, donde varios tocadores se encuentran para expresar el lenguaje tan particular de estos tambores. Isla de Flores es la calle principal que une los barrios Cuareim y Ansina, los dos principales grupos que mantienen viva esta raíz. A través del tiempo sus “cuerdas” tocan espontáneamente en esta calle hasta hoy en día (Isla de Flores corre desde la calle Jackson hasta Yaguarón y a partir de ahí hasta Río Branco adquiere el nombre de Carlos Gardel). Mientras la “cuerda” lentamente se abre paso entre las angostas calles de Montevideo, este ritmo contagioso nos arrastra a todos a su paso, rodeada por los vecinos que la acompañan. En intervalos la “cuerda” enciende una fogata para afinar las lonjas. Esta celebración preserva una fuerte tradición uruguaya, y sirve como tierra fértil para la próxima generación de tocadores, como ocurrió con sus padres y ancestros. Informal, y al mismo tiempo formidable en su naturaleza. _______________________________________________________________________ El Candombe evolucionó y continúa haciéndolo. A través de los años muchos compositores dedicaron su inspiración poética y musical a este ritmo. Un individuo que se puede contar en las primeras filas de este movimiento, a pesar de ser de raza blanca, es Hugo Fattoruso, y ahora Rey Tambor. _______________________________________________________________________ Hugo Fattoruso, compositor, arreglador, multiinstrumentista y vocalista, siempre causó un profundo efecto con su música a lo largo y ancho de las costas. Entre sus emprendimientos más conocidos figuran Los Shakers, Opa, Grupo del Cuareim, Los Pusilánimes, Trío Fattoruso y su trabajo como solista. Nacido y criado en Montevideo, Uruguay, hijo de padre y madre inclinados hacia la música, Hugo se inició en el lenguaje musical al mismo tiempo que aprendió a hablar y a caminar. Creciendo en Uruguay y siendo vecino de Argentina y Brasil, estuvo expuesto a una diversidad de matices musicales y ritmos sudamericanos. El ritmo de Candombe es algo que estuvo siempre encendido en su mente y corazón en forma natural, y un ejemplo es este último proyecto: Rey Tambor. Participando en teclados y vocal, se une con estos tres jóvenes tocadores de Candombe, los energéticos Nicolás, Fernando y Diego, que juntos navegan el mar del Candombe hacia nuevas y excitantes fronteras. _______________________________________________________________________ ENGLISH _______________________________________________________________________ The Afro-Uruguayan rhythm Candombe has played a significant role in Uruguayan culture for over 200 years. The rhythm is created by the use of three drums (tambores); tambor piano, tambor chico and tambor repique. The piano is the largest in size and the lowest in pitch of the three tambores. The rhythmic base of Candombe, its function similar to that of the upright or electric bass. The chico (small) is the smallest in size and highest in pitch of the three tambores, serving as the rhythmic pendulum. The tambor repique (ricochet) embellishes Candombe's rhythm with improvised phrases. Each of the three tambores is played with an open hand (mano) and a stick (palo) in the other. At a minimum, one of each of the three tambores must be present. _______________________________________________________________________ The purest form of Candombe takes place each Sunday night on the streets of Montevideo, where many drummers assemble, playing their drums under the moon lit sky. Isla de Flores is the main street that joins Cuareim and Ansina, Candombe's two main social groups. For over a century spontaneous cuerdas have paraded on this street, and continue to do so today (Isle de Flores is also known by its second name, Carlos Gardel). As the cuerda slowly makes its way through the narrow streets of Montevideo, this contagious rhythm takes with it all in its path, surrounded on all sides by the neighborhood people moving their bodies to the rhythm of Candombe. At intervals the cuerda will pause, and by setting a fire, will heat their drums' skins for tuning purposes. _______________________________________________________________________ These Candombe rituals preserve this strong Uruguayan tradition, and serves as the breeding ground for the next generation of young Candombe drummers, as it has for their fathers, and their fathers before them. Informal, yet formidable in nature. Candombe has evolved, and continues to do so. Throughout the years there have been many composers that have written wonderful melodies and lyrics over the rhythm. One individual who stands at the forefront of such a movement is Hugo Fattoruso. _______________________________________________________________________ Hugo Fattoruso, a composer and arranger, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, has had a profound effect on music that has touched upon shores far and wide. Endeavors such as Los Shakers, Opa, Grupo Del Cuareim, Los Pusilanimes, Trio Fattoruso, and his solo works, are endeared by those fortunate to know of his talent. Born and raised in Montevideo, Uruguay, the son of a musically rich father, Antonio, Hugo began learning the language of music at the same time he was learning to walk and talk. Growing in Uruguay, and neighbored by Argentina and Brazil, exposed him to a diverse array of musical colors and rhythms. The Afro-Uruguayan Candombe rhythm is somethng that is always burning in Hugo's heart and mind, naturally, and exemplified by this, his latest endeavor, Rey Tambor. Here Hugo, on electric keyboard and vocals, joins forces with his three young Candombe compadres, the energetic Nicolás, Fernando and Diego, together navigating Candombe to new and exciting frontiers. _______________________________________________________________________ ITALIANO _______________________________________________________________________ Il candombe, ritmo afrouruguaiano, ha avuto, durante 200 anni, un importante ruolo nella cultura dell' Uruguay. Il ritmo è creato dal suono di tre tamburi (tambores), tambor piano, tambor chico, tambor repique. Il "tambor piano" è il più grande ed il più basso in tonalità. Rappresenta la base ritmica del Candombe, e può essere paragonato al del contrabasso o del basso elettrico. Il "tambor chico" è il più piccolo con la tonalità più alta e viene usato come "accento ritmico". Il "tambor repique" arrichisce il ritmo del Candombe con frasi improvvisate. Ognuno dei tre tamburi viene suonato con una mano nuda e con una bacchetta nell'altra. Per suonare il Candombe è necessario che almeno uno dei tre sia presente. _______________________________________________________________________ La forma più pura di Candombe ha luogo ogni domenica notte nelle strade di Montevideo, dove molti percussionisti si riuniscono per suonare i loro tamburi al chiaro di luna. "Isla de Flores" è la strada che unisce il gruppo di"Cuareim" a quello di "Ansina", i due principali gruppi sociali del Candombe. Durante secoli "cuerdas" spontanee hanno sfilato in questa strada, e continuano a farlo ancora oggi (Isla de Flores è anche conosciuta con il nome attuale di Carlos Gardel). La "cuerda", attorniata dai vicini che si muovono al ritmo del Candombe, lentamente si fa largo nelle strette vie di Montevideo coinvolgendo tutti con il suo ritmo contagioso. Ad intervalli la "cuerda" si ferma, e accendendo fuochi, riscalda le pelli dei suoi tamburi per accordarli. _______________________________________________________________________ Questi rituali del Candombe preservano la forte tradizione Uruguaiana, e serve da leva per le future generazioni di percussionisti di Candombe, così com'è stato per i padri dei loro padri. Semplice eppure straordinario nella sua essenza. Il Candombe si è evoluto e continua a farlo. Attraverso gli anni molti sono stati i compositori che hanno scritto meravigliose melodie e testi con questo ritmo. Uno di loro, figura di spicco di questo stile, è Hugo Fattoruso, e adesso Rey Tambor. _______________________________________________________________________ Hugo Fattoruso, compositore, arrangiatore, multi strumentista e vocalista, ha influenzato profondamente tutta la musica alla quale si è avvicinato. Imprese come "Los Shakers", "Opa", "Grupo del Cuareim", "Los Pusilanimes", "Fattoruso Trio", e i suoi lavori in solitudine, si sono accattivate le simpatie di coloro che hanno la fortuna di conoscere il suo talento. In esso Hugo, alle tastiere elettriche e voce, si unisce a tre compagni di Candombe, l'energico Nicolas, Fernando e Diego, ed insieme portano il Candombe verso nuovi lidi. _______________________________________________________________________ ...... _______________________________________________________________________ FRANCAIS _______________________________________________________________________ Le Candombe rythme afro-uruguayen a joué un rôle important dans la culture uruguayenne depuis 200 ans. Ce rythme est créé par l’utilisation de trois tambours (tambores): Le tambor piano, le tambor chico et le tambor repique. Le piano est le plus gros et le plus grave en tonalité des 3 tambours. C’est la base rythmique du Candombe qui a la même fonction que celle de la contre-basse ou de la basse électrique. Le chico (petit) est le plus petit en taille et le plus aigu des 3 tambours sert d’accompagnement rythmique. Le repique (ricochet) embellît le rythme du Candombe avec des expressions improvisées. Chaque tambour est joué avec une main ouverte (mano) et une baguette (palo) dans l’autre. Au minimun, un de chaque de ces trois tambours doit être présent dans le Candombe. _______________________________________________________________________ La forme la plus représentative du Candombe prend place chaque dimanche soir dans les rues de Montévidéo, où de nombreux musiciens se rassemblent pour jouer de leurs tambours au clair de lune. Isla de Flores est la rue principale qui réunit Ansina et Cuareim, deux principaux groupes de Candombe. Depuis plus d’un siècle des cuerdas ont défilé dans cette rue et continuent de la faire aujourd’hui (Isla de Flores est aussi connu par son surnom: Carlos Gardel). Comme la cuerda avance doucement dans les rues étroites de Montévidéo, ce rythme contagieux emporte tout sur son passage, entouré de toutes parts par des gens qui bougent leur corps au rythme du Candombe. De temps en temps, la cuerda s’arrête et autour d’un feu, réchauffe les peaux des tambours pour obtenir la bonne tonalité. _______________________________________________________________________ Ces rituels du Candombe conservent la forte tradition uruguayenne et servent à initier la future génération de jeunes batteurs de Candombe comme cela a été pour leurs pères et leurs grands pères avant eux. Tout naturellement, la continuité. Le Candombe a évolué et continue de le faire. Depuis plusieurs années, il y a eu de nombreux compositeurs qui ont écrit de merveilleuses mélodies et de textes sur ce rythme. Un d’entre eux émerge du mouvement qui se tient en avant est Hugo Fattoruso et maintenant Rey Tambor. _______________________________________________________________________ Hugo Fattoruso, compositeur, arrangeur, multi-instrumentiste et chanteur a eu une grande influence sur la musique ce qui a ouvert de nouveaux et larges horizons. Supporters de groupes comme Los Shakers, Opa, Grupo Del Cuareim, Los Pusilamimes, Trio Fattoruso et son travail personnel, ont participé à rendre populaire son talent. Né et élevé à Montévidéo, Uruguay, fils d’un riche père musicien, Antonio, Hugo commence à apprendre la musique en même temps qu’il apprend à marcher et à parler. Il grandit en Uruguay, entouré par l’Argentine et le Brésil, ce qui l’imprègne d’une grande diversité de rythmes et de couleurs musicales. Le rythme afro-uruguayen Candombe est quelque chose qui a toujours brulé dans l’esprit et le c--ur de Hugo, très naturellement, illustré ici par son dernier supporter, Rey Tambor.
