The three tracks that are featured were recorded at Barbershop Studios, Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. It is an absolutely gorgeous studio. I had the opportunity to record with some of my favorite players and people, for that matter! Ted Brancato- (piano, arranger) - Yoshi Waki- (bass) - Chris Persad- (trumpet) Mark Brandenburg- (guitar), and Victor Jones- (drums).
Influences
Ella (but seriously, folks- isn't that a given?) Ann Hampton Callaway, Julie London, Frank Sinatra, Norah Jones, Dianna Krall, Nancy Wilson, Chet Baker, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughn, Peter Allen, Melissa Manchester, Connie Francis, Jane Monheit, Carpenters, Judy Garland, Nnenna Freelon, Judy Garland, Tony Bennett, Bill Evans, Stevie Wonder and The Backyardigans!!!
I love Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Frank Loesser, and Steven Sondheim because they are among my favorite composers who taught me that if you are true to the song and passionate about its message- the audience will experience it with you instead of simply just listening.
When her peers were listening to the “hit” of the moment, Robin Filippone had a unique infatuation for the old standards. She would listen to ten different variations and interpretations of one single song until she would wear it out only to move on to the next and continue the obsession! She identified with the simplicity yet immeasurable depth and honesty that is absent in so much of today’s music. When her friends were listening to Madonna, Robin was listening to Ella, Sarah, and just about anyone who could make the poetic lyrics and arrangements come to life. Robin was particularly interested in a group of singers that fell into a category which was considered pop music in the 50s but whose repertoire consisted of jazz standards. These vocalists were the “crossover” artists bringing standards to a larger audience due to their association with movies and television. Such artists with whom Robin identifies are Connie Francis, Julie London, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, and Judy Garland. Robin has been compared to a modern day Julie London whose sultry sound simply told a story with a sexy laid back approach to singing. But because of Robin’s obsessive listening to this genre, a number of influences can be heard in her sound. Her “mission statement” is to bring a larger, younger audience to the songs that she considers to be the true essence of music. She offers a classic pop approach to the jazz standards while keeping the integrity of these beloved tunes.
Robin Filippone has been professionally performing since the age of 15. She has worked with some of the industry’s best producers and musicians including Nick Masi from the Four Seasons, Irwin Levine, Rob Fusari, Kim Scharnberg, Clint Holmes and countless other amazing musicians in the New York area. She has studied voice since the age of 13 with the renowned Bill Riley. She has performed for Christine Todd Whitman and has starred in many Manhattan Cabarets including shows at the Royal Crown Plaza and the famous Duplex. She has performed and recorded with some of Broadway’s finest. Robin has appeared on Ed McMahon’s "Star Search". She has done numerous voice-overs and has been affiliated with the Miss America Organization for the past ten years. She has worked with the USO entertaining veterans across the country. Robin was critically acclaimed for her performances at the Showboat Casino Hotel in Atlantic City which drew sellout audiences 12 shows a week! Robin has teamed-up with New York’s finest musicians to bring you the beloved songs from the Great American Songbook.
