Originally from Ft. Worth, Texas, grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and currently reside in the Reno/Tahoe area of Northern Nevada. For over 35 years, I’ve worked as a guitarist – which is not nearly as cool as it sounds. Primarily, I perform cover tunes people like hearing in casinos, bars and dance halls. About a thousand years ago, (1960) I taught myself to play guitar by learning songs by artists such as the Ventures and Duane Eddy. The music I enjoy playing is guitar-based instrumentals, which doesn’t really thrill tone-deaf drunks and gambling addicts. As the wonderful world of live entertainment refuses to embrace my addiction to instrumentals, I decided to create this album.
During the nineties, I worked as a single act in Nevada casinos as live background entertainment. A lot of players don’t care much for these gigs, but I found they provided me musical freedom I had not experienced in other bookings. As long as I kept a lid on the volume, I could play anything I wanted – after all, my audiences were comprised of semi-comatose gamblers, cynical cocktail waitresses and the ever-present toothpick-chewing pit boss. Aside from being drowned out by the occasional video poker machine, it was a kick to stretch my sarcasm and musical ability while simultaneously analyzing the natural wildlife of downtown Reno….and for the uninitiated, that homeless guy at the bar may, in fact, be a millionaire in disguise. You never know around these parts.
Anyway, back to me. One of my job requirements in local casinos was to remain awake at three in the morning onstage. Consequently, four cuts on this album were born – after all, I had to have something to jam to while silently mocking the unwashed masses. I was surprised to find many folks who actually liked my tunes, so I’ve decided to put it all onto this album. I’ve also included the first instrumental I ever wrote (K.B.) and one of my newest pieces (Workout).
After years of playing and recording music by other artists, this work is finally ‘all about me’. Of course, I hope you like it. If you don’t, please do not tell me. I really don’t want to know.
(P.S.) I've just had the honor of being featured in Guitar Player magazine's "Web Hordes" column in the March 2009 issue, reviewing my song "Of an Afternoon" which is too cool since it's my personal favorite anyway...
“Of an Afternoon” -
"Jones’ afternoon is a calm one, and he shares the vibe with beautifully spaced melodic lines that float past like leaves on a brook. Santana is an obvious influence, but Jones masterfully commands a spiky attack and a sharp tone that still manages to soothe and caress the listener." Michael Molenda, Editor, Guitar Player Magazine, March, 2009
frank, thanx for your nice words... i read your bio and i like your sense of humour when speaking of you playing in casino houses. here in italy i often play in cafès and other weird places where if you are not thinking "i'm lucky with my guitar in hand" you are ready to escape running so fast... so i understand you very well. i'm lucky to be your space friend and we can keep in touch. i'm going to put you on my top. ciao!
Frank, congrats on your GP review and oh by the way your playing is awesome brother! You've got a beautiful natural feel and flow! Don't worry about all those negatives man, let it come from your heart like you are obviously doing and please yourself! Appreciate your friendship! Mitchell
Cheers Frank. most kind. ! Nice playing there mate. well done with the GP mag, you mentioned the carvin / mesa experiment.. I know, its funny how stuff comes out when you dont expect sometimes. My strat has a huge neck , its tuff when im tired but love it anyway ! Best. Mark
Greetings from Las Vegas, Frank! Thanks for the add, and congrats on being mentioned in the March 2009 issue of Guitar Player magazine - well deserved.
"Stratosphere" is very nice as well as your GP feature tune. Your tone, style and choice of notes reminds me a lot of of Al Di Meola's cleaner, sparkly tones/compositions. Best wishes for 2009!
Oh, and by the way, I lived in Albuquerque as a boy from 1975 to 1980. I really liked it there.
