Touch
August 7, 8 & 9, 2009
RhetOracle Dance Company presents, TOUCH, a night of contemporary jazz works that explore the basic need we, as humans, have to be physically and emotionally touched, what happens when we aren't, and what the wrong kind of touch can do to us. The night of 8 dances, featuring choreography by artistic director and Lester Horton nominee Nate Hodges, Lester Horton nominee Christopher Liu, Bri Allard, Bryana Verner and special guest choreographer Keri LaGrand, will take you on a raw journey into one of our most deeply felt wants and needs: to be touched. The night will also have a special encore of "Siren", a dance about self-induced paranoia and our distrust of each other in today's society, that debuted to an overwhelming audience reaction at Jamie Nichols' SOLD OUT 2009 Celebrate Dance.

About me: RhetOracle Dance Company is a collective of artists who strive to bring the television-viewing, counter-culture everyman back into the concert dance setting by creating dances that entertain and speak to them in a way that isn’t inaccessible or cryptic, but while also not compromising the artistic integrity of the artists. We look to use dance in this way to lure those who might not normally see dance in a concert setting so that we may educate by tackling social, political, and gender issues, inspire through thought-provoking and intriguing storylines, and challenge by pushing the envelope with controversial subject matter through thematic movement. We aim to involve ourselves in projects that speak to the everyday person, that promote social awareness, and that perpetuate a positive environment for the arts securing a healthy and happy home for dance audiences in the future.

THE TIES
Choreographed by Christopher Liu for our 2nd concert show, Modern Sin, The Ties examines a post-apocalyptic Adam & Eve: the last man and woman on Earth, and explores their relationship. The dance explores how circumstance, desperation, fear or insecurity can sometimes keep people connected, almost bound, to each other even when it isn't healthy. Watch Christopher Liu and Bryana Verner dance in the radioactive, dusty glow of fallout, lit by Jason Uchita.
END OF DAYS
Choreographed by Nate Hodges, Cynthia Clemmensen, and Christopher Liu, End Of Days, explores the last 10 minutes Earth before it ends. Structured around the 5 stages of grief, the dance follows a busy, city street and how people deal with their fast approaching fate. The dance focuses on the abandonment of control. To aid in this, the sections were separately choreographed by 2 of the choreographers then staged in any way wanted by the third, resulting in a dance neither of the three could have imagined. Working together, yet separately to achieve a final result, much like during a disaster.
THE PARABLE OF THE WEEDS
Choreographed by Bri Allard for our second concert show, Modern Sin, the dance explores the notions of pride, self-interest and how a person, or mentality, can enter into a group of people who work together and twist and strangle their intentions so that they begin to work only for themselves, resulting in dissolution and demise.
DEBUT
RhetOracle Dance Company's first concert work! For its first introduction, RhetOracle wanted to do something fresh and light, the way we all want to feel when we first meet someone one...intrigued, captivated, and content. Dancing to a string adaptation of Sugar, We're Going Down, we hoped to make a musical connection to our audience while also introducing oursleves and our style.

Imagine a world where someone’s inner expression has been suppressed and regulated like some drug waiting for FDA approval. Imagine a world where your voice is seen as weapon of mass destruction. Imagine a world where rhythms and beats have been buried, for the greater “good”.
That is the world these four individuals live in...

Culture Shock and Future Shock Los Angeles present A BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE
[A classic novel gets a Hip Hop spin]
“A Beautiful Struggle” tells the story of four individuals who dare to create in a time when artistic expression has been outlawed. Inspired by the real life experiences of those whose lives have been deeply touched by the arts and inexorably changed by a belief in themselves, this unique original work uses music, art, spoken word, and dance to bring their stories to the stage.
