In 1992, Kevin Nunn (vocals) was playing drums in Spy Mission Pineapple when he met Walter Hayes (guitar). The band was breaking up, so he and Walter, along with bass player/singer Bill Barwick, formed the band One. After five years, two albums and several tours, One broke up, citing musical differences. In 1997, Kevin and Walter formed The Mighty Levites with bass player/singer and long time friend, Stefano Nguma (Umojah Nation). Several guitarists, keyboard players and percussionists spent time in the band as they played frequently throughout northeast Ohio, opening up for legendary acts such as Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, and Culture. In 2004, Walter moved to California, and the band broke up. After playing with Jonah and the Whale Watchers in Monterey for a few years, Walter returned to Akron to form Rhodes Street Rude Boys with Kevin and Andre Roberson (drums). The band went through several members before settling in with Ajayku “AJ” Essel on vocals/percussion and Steve Ellsworth (Last Free Radical) on bass. Rhodes Street Rude Boys play what they feel. Diverse musical backgrounds and taste help bring a fresh approach to the music. RSRB is currently working on new material to record and perform in early 2010.
