Rhys Auteri is a singer/songwriter based in Melbourne. Born in Skye in 1981, he began to write simple melodies as a child, accompanying himself with arrangements on tennis racquets. Rhys had lessons for violin, piano, and clarinet before teaching himself guitar at age 14. He began writing songs immediately, drawing inspiration from his favourite melody makers such as Simon & Garfunkle, The Smiths, The Beatles and The Kinks.
While initial shyness led to a relatively late start to live performance, for the last four years Rhys has been found playing at various Melbourne venues including The Empress, Manchester Lane, The Ember Lounge and Murmur. With lyrics that are wry and enigmatic, Rhys’ songs range from stay-in-your-head pop songs to carefully constructed spare compositions. His precise and soulful melodies bring to mind modern outfits like The Shins, Jens Lekman and Neil Finn.
Rhys Auteri has performed and collaborated with rising musicians such as Nicholas Roy and Paola del Rio, and often appears with Monica White as The Baby Drivers - their playful harmonies winning many admirers in the big city. He is currently spending some time at home recording an EP to be made available at his performances.
