Young drummer Galen Grant has entered the scene with plenty of experience and a very diverse musical background! While in pursuit of a New College of SF degree in Art and Social Change, Galen had the opportunity to take full advantage of Berkeley C.A.'s 'Jazzschool' were he studied and performed with Bay Area greats such as Wil Blades, Seward McCain, Colin Bailey, Brian Pardo, and many other influential musicians. During this time Galen also cultivated his eclectic rhythmic sensibilities at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music studying under tabla guru Swapan Chaudury. Galen's direction has been molded by many musicians. He is constantly in search of the 'New Music', drawing from the rhythmic concepts of Free Jazz, Jungle, Latin, Indian grooves, and the entire Hip-Hop diaspora. Grant has worked professionally with Bay Area musicians Max Cowen(+ONE,Highway Robbers) Eli Hurwitz(ELive), Tomoki Spilsbury(freelance jazz virtuoso), Danny Cao (Vinly, DU UY), MC Dublin(Shotgun Wedding Quintet/Jazz Mafia), Gabby LaLa(Les CLaypool), and the I-World International Rockers opening for such acts as Eeka Mouse and Les Claypool! Galen is currently performing and recording with Bay Area duo +ONE, while continually in search of projects/diverse musical partnerships to expand and fulfill the American youth's craving for a rich cultural identity.
The date marked tunes available above are a brief audio tour of Galen's past and present endeavors. The later four tracks represent a 'rhythmatists' journey into experimental electronica. All Rhythmatist tracks have been composed and played by Galen with the exception of bass on "Lunacy" and "Past the Breakers", these are the slapings and Dub lines of Eli Hurwitz, aka. Elive. Galen is currently playing with +ONE, the Oakland /Berkeley based organ project. For a more comprehensive listen to Galen's jazz approach, please check out the +ONE Demo tunes at www.myspace.com/plusoneproject !!!
