TRAPS REVIEW - INPRESS MELBOURNE - NOV 09 It’s been almost a full year since four-piece Sydneysiders Traps graced Melbourne with their presence and after a hiatus of that length it’s always hard to say whether a band has intentionally altered their sound or has just undergone the usual 12-month machinations. Either way, as of November 2009, Traps don’t own that ‘indie rock’ label as fully as they used to. In its place is something a little more diverse, the percussion ramping up, Kieran Day experiencing some Buckley moments on vocals and the guitars ramming it home with plenty to do. It’s less We Are Scientists and more Eddy Current. Less indie, more noise, more psych, more fi tting for their new label, Rice Is Nice. With the release of a well-received 7” in May, Melbourne appears to be a little late to the party on this one. On the other hand, the songs are well lived in by now and played with the appropriate aplomb. It’s a delicate balance to catch a band at this point in their play, record, release cycle, but Traps don’t sound bored of the Standard Life/Brainwasher release just yet. In fact it might be optimum viewing time for anyone beginning to weary themselves with the constant out-newing of the new, anyone who likes to hear an album well toured, instead of being confused by multiple releases in short periods, all similarly named and lightly toured, all effectively discarded as quickly as they’re announced. You have to be a little jealous that we won’t be experiencing the double bill with Children Collide that more northern cities get to enjoy, but if they’re going to continue to bring the weather with them, hopefully it won’t be another year before Traps are back in Melbourne. - Caroline Dempsey.

RECENT WRITINGS ABOUT TALONS LIVE

“Talons blew the fucking place apart! There’s a cut-throat brutality to their sound, a brittle teeth-grinding severity that’s distinctively un-Melbourne in a way – an underlying cynicism indicative of Sydney life perhaps? We pride ourselves on the quality of rock music coming out of this town, but my word when Sydney produces diamonds they are jagged, robust little fuckers and they’re not afraid to tell it like it is. Talons blew my fragile little mind and turned a killer night into one of the gigs of the year.” INPRESS - MAY 2009

    R = N!

    We're playing two shows this weekend and hope you can, in the midst of all competing ace shows and tiredness and summertime shandy sipping shenanigans and suchlike, come along.

    On Friday we're playing at The Workers Club for Otouto's 'Sushi' single launch with Milk Teddy.  And on Sunday, this sweet-as-pie line-up we threw together at the last moment - Sydney's Megastick Fanfare (exuberant, deftly creative pop nouveau) and The Motifs (cute as fuck twee pop).  As illustrated below:

    Whaddaya say?  Whatever it be, we hope you're fighting fit and feeling fine.  Looking forward to hearing the Super Melody thang too, and of course Seekae... if we can get our hands on a copy.

    Sincerely,
    ii.
