   Richard's Blurbs
About me:
Richard Boyd Barrett is the People Before Profit alliance candidate for Dun Laoghaire constituency in this year’s genral election He stands for a real alternative that places the needs of people, community and environment before the interests of developers and big business. The government and the establishment political parties are already spending vast amounts of money, making promises about what they will do for us. Richard Boyd Barrett has a proven track record at local and national level of organising community and grass-roots movements to raise the issues that matter. He believes that it is People Power not promises that bring real change. If elected he will ensure voice of the People is heard in the Dail. *Richard is the Chairperson and founding member of Save Our Seafront. He played a leading role in the successful campaign to stop plans for an 8-storey private development of Dun Laoghaire Baths. The campaign has forced the Council to agree to restore the Baths as a public amenity. *He is campaigning against privatisation or high-rise apartments on the public seafront or on public spaces, such as Blackrock Baths, Dun Laoghaire Harbour, the Carlisle Pier, Bulloch Harbour. He wants these sites developed only as public amenities. *He has actively supported local residents in areas such as Sallynoggin, Glenageary, Monkstown Farm, Dalkey and elsewhere in opposing unwanted developments and potentially dangerous phone masts. *Richard is the convenor of the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Campaign Against Service Charges. He has led the campaign in this area against the unjust bin tax and the run-down of local services. He stands for a free public recycling system and opposes plans to reintroduce water charges. *He is he Chairperson of the Irish Anti-War Movement, which has the led the campaign in this country against George Bush’s disastrous war in Iraq and the use of Shannon by the US military. He has played a central role in organising countless peace marches, including one of the biggest demonstrations in Irish history in 2003. *He has been a leading voice in the greater Dun Laoghaire area campaigning for more social and affordable housing & public amenities and youth facilities. He has consistently campaigned against the handover of public land to private developers. *Over many years, he has campaigned for workers and trade union rights and against racism and the exploitation of immigrant workers. *Richard has lived all his life in the Dun Laoghaire area and is committed to maintaining and developing the area as a community with properly funded public services and a decent quality of life for all. Thank you Richard, for you statement in the press, on RTE, and for steadfastly enduring the rain to take the Green (or is it the Yellow?) Party to task on Shannon Warport. I wish I could've been there with you all . . .

Thank you for continuing to speak truth to power, for giving a voice to the voiceless, and for consistently remaining true to your principles.

Peace,

Kathleen Ruane

Freedom, media and revolution in Venezuela

President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela faces huge attacks on his plans for a Socialism of the 21st Century, from both the wealthy establishment and media elites within the country, and the US government and their allies without. The non renewal of the broadcast license to the RCTV television station, which supported the failed right wing coup attempt against Chavez in 2002, has seen a renewed offensive by the countrys upper classes- he stands accused of being a dictator, despite winning election after election. His new party, the United Socialist Party, has just registered its five millionth member.

Coral Wynter, a journalist for the Green Left magazine, lived in Caracas, Venezuela for the last year. She is just back and speaking tonight about freedom, the media and revolution in Venezuela, at the Latin American Centre, 37 Selwyn Street, Onehunga, at 7.30pm tonight (Thurs June 7th).

Organised by the Venezuela Aotearoa Solidarity Team (VAST)

For press interviews with Coral please contact (09) 634 3984 or Joe at (021) 186 1450.
