Bio

Richard Brinka, tenor saxophonist from New York (constantly on the move). Mostly self-taught, with a handful of informal lessons by Charles Tyler, he has been playing with a number of eminent artists around the globe. While busy free-lancing, Brinka also has been pursuing his own two projects of Electricswingavantboprock, COLLECTOR and “Meanface Angelheart”. Brinka has toured in the United States, Asia and Africa. He has played live and/or recorded a variety of styles with a number of outstanding musicians, such as tenor vocalist and Rock’n Roll Hall of Famer Tony (“Only You”) Williams, the original lead vocalist of The Platters; bassist Percy Jones of Tunnels; trombonist Steve Swell; and singer Lenny (“Since I Fell For You”) Welch. Among many other places, he lived in Uganda, performing regularly with The Afrigo Band of “Mississippi Massala” and “The Last King of Scotland” fame, and Kenya, where he played with the Madinda Dancers. In Viet Nam, he accompanied jazz vocalist Tuet Loan. Other performances were for distinguished audiences such as the King of Swaziland, the Prime Minister of Thailand, as well as at the coronation of the King of the Bugandans, to name a few. While residing in Zimbabwe for five years, Brinka participated in the Chimanimani Arts Festival and the annual Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA), where he was one of the main attractions with his own musical interpretations of William Shakespeare’s sonnets, accompanying renowned African actor Wina Mismati, and the featured tenor sax soloist in Duke Ellington’s “Sacred Concerts”. He performed a number of times with Zimbabwe’s Superstar Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi and played with Andy Brown (internationally known as “Andy Brown and the Storm”) and one of Zimbabwe’s finest percussionists, Adam Chisvo. On several occasions, he shared the stage with the country’s premier poet, Chirikure Chirikure. As the first coordinator of Jazz Studies at the Zimbabwe College of Music, Brinka organized a series of successful concerts. During his stay in Zimbabwe, Brinka recorded the duet “Hande Blazo” with German recording engineer Michael Pigge, which became a hit in the Zimbabwean club scene. Brinka recorded in Zrenjanin, Serbia, with Experimental/Electronica “Blank Disc”, Srdan Muc and Robert Roza. COLLECTOR "Almost Live” was well received ! Brinka just recorded the long-anticipated CD, COLLECTOR II “Shupikai”. due for release in March 2012. Also,there will be a new CD by “Meanface Angelheart”. early 2013
