A Mindfulness Practice

'Beings are numberless, I vow to free them.

Delusions are inexhaustible, I vow to end them.

Dharma gates are boundless, I vow to enter them.

The Buddha way is unsurpassable, I vow to realize it'. -Four Vows

{Study the guitar with a deep sense of gratitude.}

'We vow together with all beings, from this life on throughout numerous lifetimes, not to fail to hear the true Dharma. Hearing this we will not be skeptical and will not be without faith. Together with the great earth and all animate beings we will accomplish the Way.' -Dogen

{By expressing the Dharma we accomplish the Way.}

'May all beings be happy. May they be joyous and live in safety. Standing or walking, sitting or lying down, during all one's waking hours let one practice the Way with gratitude.' -Metta Sutra

{Play the guitar and practice the Way.}

Tibetan Prayer Wheel

...on the second day i was in a tavern,

somewhere on the aegean coast.

several old unshaven men,

drinking rum concoctions,

were standing at the bar.

i was sitting at a corner table.

i played fandangos on my blue guitar.

i could smell the mediteranean,

as an on-shore breeze came softly

through the windows.

i felt that i belonged there.

"Music is the one thing in which there is no use trying to deceive others or make false pretenses." Confucius

"Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple." Charles Mingus

"We play music to align the spirit." Traditional Hindu Saying

"It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception." Einstein (when asked about his theory of relativity)

"Don't play the notes. Play the meaning of the notes." Pablo Casals

"To me living and music are all the same thing. And I keep finding out more about music as I learn more about myself, my environment, about all kinds of different things in life. I play what I live. Therefore, just as I can't predict what kinds of experiences I'm going to have, I can't predict the directions in which my music will go. I just want to write and play my instrument as I feel." McCoy Tyner

"Without music, life would be a mistake." Friedrich Nietzsche

"Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation. Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound." Kabir

"I used to edit myself. If something seemed super-simple I had to make it more complicated. Now I'm trying to let what's in there come out and acknowledge where I come from. I'm trying to make it more. ..true." Bill Frisell

"What is best in music is not to be found in the notes." Mahler

"Do not fear mistakes. There are none." Miles Davis

"We hide ourselves in our music to reveal ourselves." Jim Morrison

"Music is perpetual, and only the hearing is intermittent." Thoreau

"Limitation creates form." Krishnamurti

"Ceaseless work, analysis, reflection, writing much, endless self-correction, that is my secret." J.S. Bach

"Music is the shorthand of emotion. Emotions, which let them selves be described in words with such difficulty, are directly conveyed to man in music, and in that is its power and significance." Tolstoy

"There is geometry in the humming of the strings. There is music in the spacing of the spheres." Pythagoras

"The guitar is of no great importance to me. The people it brings to me are what matter. They are what I'm extremely grateful for, because they are alive. The guitar is just an apparatus." Pat Martino

"To me, architecture is music, gardening is music, farming is music, painting is music, poetry is music. In all the occupations of life where beauty has inspired, where the divine wine has been poured out, there is music." Hazrat Pir-O-Murshid Inayat Khan

Private Instruction~Beginning~Intermediate~Advanced <>

Welcome. I am an experienced teacher who can help students launch and/or advance their creative process. I create 'personalized' programs of study for all levels of students. I am a native of Los Angeles and have taught locally, as well as abroad for the past 20 years. 25 students study privately with me at the present time.

My approach to playing and teaching is dedicated to tone, articulation, and intonation, with a strong emphasis on deconstructing melodies and harmonies, in standard and altered tunings. Additionally I've devoted many years to the study of Dadgad tuning as well as finger-style and slide guitar. If you're writing songs we can enhance that process as well. I teach all levels and I've been successful with each of my student's interests.

If you're a beginning student, you'll need an instrument that is easy to play, and you will also want to make a commitment in order to learn the following:

> How to play basic chord shapes

> Make chord changes

> Study songs and tutorials specific to the guitar

Remarks:

"Splendid acoustic playing, combining cutting-edge finger-style technique with an East~West inflected slide guitar style."
Guitar Player Magazine

"A gifted musician and teacher." Chris Hillman

"Richard creates beautiful audible emotion." Steve Vai

"Peikoff has developed an extremely cool approach to solo fingerstyle guitar: informed by the tradition of the instrument, but with his own unique twists. He uses his thorough understanding of Indian Classical music, to expand the expressive palette of the guitar, and to create a sound that is rich with possibilities." Michael Manring

"The contemplative, resonant, and honestly heartfelt world of Richard Peikoff's guitar music creates a restful, harmonious, and ample space in which to immerse ourselves and allows us to gaze into distant horizons, familiar and yet new. I hope that this music arrives safely at all the harbors that would welcome it." Jorge Strunz

"Richard has a unique and enchanting expression on the guitar. His sound is deep and complex and at the same time immediately accessible and immensely enjoyable. He is an original and authentic voice in the world of guitar." Teja Bell

"Richard is an innovative and brilliant guitarist whose intricately crafted solo guitar compositions convey a deep sense of meditative connectedness as well as a finely tuned aesthetic." Kit Walker

"It has been one of the great pleasures and great honors in my playing career to have met and collaborated with Richard Peikoff. Sit back and let his music take you to the place where it originated."
Buzz Feiten

"Highly Recommended." Fred Walecki/Owner | Westwood Music (Los Angeles family owned and operated premier pro-shop since 1944).
