A LETTER ADDRESSED TO THE MUSIC SUPERVISORS OF NEW MOON AND THE TWILIGHT SAGA, FROM A FAN OF MINE:
Have you ever had a dream that seemed nearly impossible, but you were determined to reach for the stars – come what may? I think we all have had those dreams, though not all of us are brave enough to actually reach beyond ourselves and all that is familiar to achieve our dream. One of my favorite musicians has such a dream - Rick Mugrage wants more than anything to be on the "New Moon" soundtrack.
As a fan, I support his dream. I'm not musical, though I wish I were. I'm not a professional writer, though I would love to be. I live in a small town surrounded by trees buried in the middle of Georgia. I was raised inside a small world that seems to get smaller everyday. Rick Mugrage's music reminds me sometimes of just how much beauty is still out there to be lived and experienced.
Stephenie Meyer's stories start with a world that I believe we all relate to – and then reaches beyond that, and shows us how nothing is impossible. The music that helped paint the moods and emotions in her ears as she wrote those stories were all so varied and vibrant.
The soundtrack for the first Twilight film was very tasteful and even brilliant.. but it didn't really contain as much “heart and soul” that the fans of this series have come to appreciate. While the movie, soundtrack and the books have come to popular acclaim – those of us who first fell in love with the loves story painted with words found in the books come from varied backgrounds. I do respect that anyone with the task to put together a compilation of music that would be found in good taste to all of us is nearly impossible.
Rick Mugrage is one artist that I'm writing you about whose music my friends and I find to be both vibrant and soulful. Rick Mugrage. I'm sure you've heard of him, but if you haven't given him a listen, please do so!
He has the voice that contains the soulfulness of Robert Pattinson, Duncan Sheik, James Blunt, or even a more gentle version of Jeff Buckley. His words paint a world around the listener of vibrant color and emotion. Honestly, his songs contain the kind of male emotional admissions that I have always imagined Edward to have. It's an awkward balance – emotional songs that don't suggest that a female artist should be singing the words; and I believe that Rick Mugrage has found this balance in his music.
I don't ask or demand for you to put Rick Mugrage on the soundtrack – I only ask that you listen to his music and I trust that you will hear it's value for yourself. :)
The song “Signs” is an exact word portrait of what takes place in the scene of the book where Bella has her chance to save Edward in New Moon. It paints the world that surrounds the singer and his listeners with hues of gray and brown..yet constantly hints at the far more vibrant hues that reside in a fleeting hope.
Thank you for taking the time to read my humble suggestion! I look forward to enjoying your work as it fills the film that I think we're all excited about. I love that wonderful “complete” feeling that means there was nothing else to be done to make a work of art more beautiful!
