TelevisionDon't watch too much of it, but have just bought the first season of Lost on DVD to see what all the fuss is about and have to admit, I like it a lot. I loved Six Feet Under when it was on. Other than that, I really don't watch, other than a few cooking shows on the Food network.
BooksHere are a few of my favorites (some all-time, some recent, some written by friends who also have the genetic misfortune of being writers); these are in no particular order. My own books, of course, can all be found on my website at www.rickrreed.com.

In their October 2006 issue, Unzipped magazine said this about me: "You could call him the Stephen King of gay horror." That's the kind of comparison I can only hope to live up to. I've published several novels, the most recent of which is called High Risk . High Risk is the story of a bored housewife who engages in anonymous daytime sexual encounters while her husband is at work until she meets a handsome--and psychotic--stranger. Your father's morality tale was never like this!

In January of this year, Deadly Vision came out. It's the story of a small-town single mother who becomes blessed (or cursed) with psychic powers and begins having horrific visions into the disappearances of some teenage girls in her town, putting herself and her little son, Max, into grave danger. Reviewers are already calling it “fiendishly good."

IM came out in May 2007 and reviewers called it a "hell of ride," a "fast-paced page turner" and "a deliciously nasty psychological thriller." The book is about a serial killer who uses internet hook up sites to lure his victims and has a lot of twists and turns, the principle one being: is the killer himself even alive?

In September of 2006, my tragic vampire love story, In the Blood , came out. The book follows parallel story lines: one set in the abstract expressionist art scene in 1950s Greenwich Village, and the other in modern-day Chicago, following a streetwalker/artist. Reviewers have said this one has "nail-biting" suspense" and is so visual "you feel as if you were watching everything instead of reading the words."

In 2006, Twisted: Tales of Obsession and Terror was published. This book is a collection of some of my best horror short stories. A lot of the stories in Twisted: Tales of Obsession and Terror have appeared in various anthologies. To date, my short fiction has appeared in about twenty anthologies.

My professional writing career began in the early 1990s, with the publication of Obsessed and Penance , both in Dell's much-lauded horror line, Abyss, which Stephen King called, "remarkable." Together, those two books, the first about a serial killer who believes he's a vampire terrorizing Chicago and the second about street kids in Chicago's uptown and the pedophile who preys on them, sold over 80,000 copies. In 2006, back-in-print.com, brought both titles back into print in handsome new trade paperback editions. In 2000, A Face Without a Heart was published to rave reviews and named best horror novel of the year by the queerhorror.com website. The book is a modern-day version of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Upcoming novels include Orientation and Dead End Street, (both in 2008, risking over-exposure and critical backlash).

In October of 2006, I left Chicago (my home for sixteen years) to move to Miami, FL with my partner Bruce and our Boston Terrier, Lily. Visit me online at www.rickrreed.com.

Who I'd like to meet:
Charles Bukowski, Lily Tomlin, John Waters are the first three who come to mind. Lunch? But if I can be more all-encompassing, I would say that I'd also like to meet other writers/readers of horror, suspense, sick and twisted humor, and GLBT literature (that johnny-come-lately genre). I'd also like to meet agents, editors, predators, members of the lunatic fringe, closet Judge Judy fans, bookies, hipsters, whores, acrobats, linguists, and people who buy the painting that matches the sofa.
