One-time Eric's Trip frontman Rick White has a liking for psychedelic trippiness, but not in a pleasant flowers-in-your-hair kind of way. With his rock outfit Elevator, he takes psyche and turns it slightly Psycho, laying on the echo, pushing hushed vocals up high in the mix, and penning melodies that occasionally classify as creepy. It would be simple to label The Rick White Album "Elevator Unplugged," as much of his trademark sound is here, but that would ignore just how different the unplugging makes the record sound. With fuzzed-out electrics replaced by finger-pickin', The Rick White Album becomes a kind of dark, foreboding folk, starting with "She Is The Path" and continuing through most of the album. Here and there, he lightens the proceedings, as with the lilting "Hematospermia" or the vaguely Elliot Smith-ish "Strange To Be Alive;" in other places, his songwriting connects to other traditions, as it does on "Slow Moon Bloom," which is part dark psyche, part train song. Fans of White's Sadies/Greg Keelor side-project, The Unintended, will enjoy The Rick White Album; those who like Elevator may miss the aggressive approach. Still, The Rick White Album -- following Elevator's most recent and best release -- shows White has an unique style all his own, and within his own parameters, continues to get better and better. ~ James Hayashi-Tennant, earshot-online.com
