About me: The mission of RightRides For Women's Safety, Inc. is to build safer communities by eliminating harassment and sexual assault. We accomplish this by community organizing to offer direct service programs, plus fostering greater safety awareness and individual empowerment in our related educational programs.
In our RightRides program, we offer women, transgender (both m and f identified) and gender queer individuals a free, late-night ride home to insure their safe commute to or through high-risk areas. Email us at volunteer@rightrides.org if you can help out as a driver, navigator or dispatcher. RightRides can expand to additional nights and areas with more volunteers!
In our Safe Walk program we offer walking escorts for any one who doesn't want to walk alone. Safe Walk is a seasonal program and we're currently seeking volunteers owning bikes to make Safe Walk happen in 2009! Email volunteer@rightrides.org if you can help out.
The RightRides program currently is offering pick up and drop offs in these neighborhoods. Because there is a limited number of volunteers and resources, the ride request must begin and end in these areas:
BRONX: Hunts Point, Mott Haven, Melrose, Port Morris, The Hub
BROOKLYN: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Boreum Hill, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Carroll Gardens, Downtown Brooklyn areas, Fort Greene, Gowanus Canal, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Red Hook, Sunset Park, Williamsburg, Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Borough Park, Lefferts Gardens, Ditmas Park
MANHATTAN: All of Harlem (from 96th on the east side and 110th on the west side, north to 165th St) PLUS all downtown areas located 23rd Street and south. AND... as of 10/25/2008 we conduct pickups in all Midtown neighborhoods.
QUEENS: Astoria, Long Island City, Ridgewood, Sunnyside.
We can expand to other areas and nights with increased volunteer interest!
Please check out our website for more info and to learn about volunteering. www.RightRides.org
Thanks for your support for WPS1.org. Unfortunately, the project has been discontinued, but if you liked WPS1, there’s a new internet radio station run by many of the same people called Art International Radio (ArtonAir.org) that has access to most of WPS1’s archived content. It’s all free, it’s all on demand; take a look.
