Interests

  • General

I love to scrapbook though I don't have too much time for that anymore. I also enjoy reading and writing. I don't really write too much, but I'm hoping to finally start a blog and write in that. Other interests include watching TV, playing with my kids, not cleaning the house, and figuring out puzzles.
  • Music

Mostly I listen to 80s music. I like it all. Pop, rock, country...
  • Movies

I haven't seen any really interesting movies lately, but some of my favorites are Top Gun, Beaches, Fried Green Tomatoes...various other movies come to mind, but I really am too lazy to type them all out!
  • Television

I'm a TV addict. I have two Comcast DVRs in my house, so I record shows like crazy! My favorite, can't miss shows are Mythbusters, Ghost Hunters, Dirty Jobs, 24, all of the CSIs, Las Vegas, Crossing Jordan, Without a Trace, Cold Case... Can you tell I'm addicted?!
  • Books

I love romance novels, but mostly the not-too-graphic ones. I also really enjoy Patricia Cornwell's series about Kay Scarpetta. Another favorite is the Lincoln Rhyme series by Jeffery Deaver.
  • Heroes

I don't know that I have any heroes except for my dad and my husband. :) ..

Blurbs

About me:

I'm a SAHM to 5 kids. I no longer homeschool my kids. They're all in public school now (except the four year-old). Because of a weird district line move, our we are no longer in the Federal Way SD, we're in the Kent Public school district. It's quite different in the Kent school district. The kids are different, the atmosphere is different. I don't know why?! Weird. I'm a Type 1 diabetic and I just started insulin pump therapy. I love my new Cozmo, whose name is Wanda! (If you don't get the reference, you don't have kids who watch the Fairly OddParents!) My husband is a WAHD, and we constantly bug him throughout the day. It's a wonder he actually gets anything done everyday! ..

Who I'd like to meet:

It's hard to say who I'd like to meet. Mostly non-famous people like the friends I've met online, gone through pregnancies with, talked about diabetes with, and just generally share common interests. As far as famous people, I'd like to meet the Ghost Hunters cast as well as the Mythbusters cast. I'd also like to meet some famous diabetics such as Halle Berry, Tommy Lee and Darren Brass (he's on Miami Ink). ..

    In the other gardens
    And all up the vale,
    From the autumn bonfires
    See the smoke trail!

    Pleasant summer over
    And all the summer flowers,
    The red fire blazes,
    The grey smoke towers.

    Sing a song of seasons!
    Something bright in all!
    Flowers in the summer,
    Fires in the fall!

THEY say to me, thy clear and crystal eyes:
"Why dost thou love me so, strange lover mine?"
Be sweet, be still! My heart and soul despise
    All save that antique brute-like faith of thine;

And will not bare the secret of their shame
To thee whose hand soothes me to slumbers long,
Nor their black legend write for thee in flame!
Passion I hate, a spirit does me wrong.

Let us love gently. Love, from his retreat,
Ambushed and shadowy, bends his fatal bow,
And I too well his ancient arrows know:

Crime, horror, folly. O pale marguerite,
Thou art as I, a bright sun fallen low,
O my so white, my so cold Marguerite.

O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stain'd
With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit
Beneath my shady roof; there thou may'st rest,
And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe,
And all the daughters of the year shall dance!
Sing now the lusty song of fruits and flowers.

'The narrow bud opens her beauties to
    The sun, and love runs in her thrilling veins;
Blossoms hang round the brows of Morning, and
Flourish down the bright cheek of modest Eve,
Till clust'ring Summer breaks forth into singing,
And feather'd clouds strew flowers round her head.

'The spirits of the air live in the smells
Of fruit; and Joy, with pinions light, roves round
The gardens, or sits singing in the trees.'
Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat,
Then rose, girded himself, and o'er the bleak
Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.

I finally got to see Wicked last night! It was very sad but very funny too. Have you seen it? If not, I would encourage you to go the first chance you get.
If you don't love it, I'll eat a bug!

Santa Claus : An Engineers Perspective

    I.
There are approximately two billion children (persons under 18) in the
world. However, since Santa does not visit children of Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist religions, this reduces the workload for Christmas night to 15% of the total, or 378 million (according to the Population Reference Bureau). At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that comes to 108 million homes, presuming that there is at least one good child in each.

II. Santa has about 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 967.7 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with a good child, Santa has around 1/1,000th of a second to park the sleigh, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left for him, get back up the chimney, jump into his sleigh and get on to the next house.

Assuming that each of these 108 million stops is evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false, but will accept for the purpose of our calculations), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household; a total trip of 75.5 million miles, not counting bathroom stops or breaks. This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second - 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a pokey 27.4 miles per second, and a conventional reindeer can run (at best) 15 miles per hour.
  • Dec 24 2008 5:27 AM

III. The payload of the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized Lego set (two pounds), the sleigh is carrying over 500 thousand tons, not counting Santa himself. On land, a conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that the "flying" reindeer could pull ten times the normal amount, the job can't be done with eight or even nine of them - Santa would need 360,000 of them. This increases the payload, not counting the weight of the sleigh, another 54,000 tons, or roughly seven times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth (the ship, not the monarch).

IV. 600,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this would heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as a spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer would absorb 14.3 quintliion joules of energy per second each. In short, they would burst into flames almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second, or right about the time Santa reached the fifth house on his trip.

Not that it matters, however, since Santa, as a result of accelerating from a dead stop to 650 miles per second in .001 seconds, would be subjected to centrifugal forces of 17,500 g's. A 250 pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs and reducing him to a quivering blob of pink goo.

Therefore, if Santa did exist, he's dead now.
