Massie gets in your face with a cunning array of mixed media: pencil, pigma microns, acrylic paint, acrylic inks, triplus fineliners, tombo markers, copic markers, gouache, and a dozen other mark-making devices for which there are no names.
With a slight tip of the cap towards pop art, Massie takes the notion of portraiture and pries it apart, injecting colour and contrast into the topological contours of his subjects including unique friendly faces of crown street locals and friends.
By balancing subtle line tracings with violent acrylic backgrounds, he captures and exposes the subtle worlds between portraiture and caricature.
With his delicate mix of fantasy and reality, a sense of harmony emerges from antithetical applications of physical stance, line, colour, balance, emphasis, space, texture and detail.
