Bio
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .... Contemporary hip-hop is an art form forged from out of the too-harsh realities of our city streets. Sometimes an artist finds his way out of these streets forming rhymes and music from his past. Sometimes the struggle can be long and tiring, so they stay in their neighborhood, while allowing their environment to feed them. Whether a hip-hop artist has left the ‘hood or remained working therein—the city streets, its people, and its too harsh realities are forever inside them, provoking new ideas, new rhymes and rhythms—like a battery. This is the story of Riq Rose. While he moved, at times, to other boroughs, it was Harlem, in upper Manhattan, where Riq Rose lived most of his life. Harlem was both his home and his source. Born Tariq Williams, Riq lived in Harlem with his two brothers and his mother who raised her three sons on her own. Though he had his own pack of friends to run with, it was his cousins Tasean and Laron with whom he was most seen with. The three cousins found a bond in their shared interest in rap and talented skills at rhyming. They composed together and adopted the names Riq Rose, Tobb Cobaine, and Juelz Santana. But amidst the dreams and aspirations, loomed the city streets of Harlem. The all too common criminal elements fed inspiration for rhymes and stories, but at the same time these same elements barred upward movement and presented temptations. As he was struggling composing music, Riq was watching the older cats make an easy name for themselves through any means, navigating the world of Harlem streets to gain ground. The veins of crime ran thick in the streets of Harlem and thickest in those inhabitants looking for a way up. Riq’s brother, Jabbar, became tangled in the drug game and was subsequently convicted of murder. At the same time his closest aunt, Hersey, struggled with a decline in health which led to her untimely death. These events, among others, took Riq Rose to darker corners and Harlem took a firmer hold. There were fights. There were “situations”. And some situations went beyond fighting. Soon Riq would find himself convicted of gun charges resulting in probation and heading down the same, dead end road, his brother had chosen. It was at this point, the fusion of the streets, his soul and the artist inside of him, that Riq took control of his life and made the decision to develop his art and pursue his passion of becoming an MC. He found, his cousin Juelz was making a name for himself working with rapper Cam’ron on Diplomat Records. After cementing himself as a major artist, Juelz formed Skull Gang and made Riq Rose a cornerstone of his movement. The rest is history in the making. -
