Influences
THE TOILET TIMES
was me & aaron white's first attempt at a fanzine in 1985-1986. we were both at the tail end of high school. i think aaron came up with the name "toilet times." aaron also did this cover art (above) and as you could see we had no idea about proportion. all our layouts were on different size pieces of paper. notice the shawn kerri rip-off in the top left corner (girl holding flag) copied from an old t.s.o.l. / d.o.a. flyer from 1982. we had no clue what we were doing and neither of us had jobs. i don't know how we planned on paying for the printing. i think in the back of our minds we were hoping to get it printed for free 'cause we went to school with a kid who's parents owned mjm printing & graphics (9th street) and he would get his parents to print house party flyers for us for free during our high school daze. at some point before we were even finished with the issue, we walked into the print shop (mjm) to get a quote - they told us about $500 bucks - we walked out scratching our heads. i think we tried to finish the issue but i think we both knew it would never get printed. we had a gig photo section and we borrowed mike naylor's gig photos that he had taken from various gigs and we cut 'em all up and made collages. he wasn't too happy about it. we were really into the descendents and they had just gotten back together (i don't wanna grow up). we had a flyer from an anti club show and noticed they were playing with a band named raszebrae (debbie patino, ingrid baumgart, katie childe, janet housden) who were featured in the new flipside and it had their phone number listed. we called them and scheduled an interview and they got us on the guest list. i brang my huge ghetto blaster and aaron came up with some quick (artsy) questions and we interviewed them on the steps of the anti club before the gig. we were broke and could barely scrounge enough money for gas to get there so we were super stoked our plan worked out. long story short - we interviewed raszebrae before the gig and then snuck the ghetto blaster in and bootlegged the descendents by taping over the raszebrae interview. i know, but we were kids. yeah, we probably should have brang two cassettes but what the fuck. funny shit. we were learning and we had a lot of fun working on the zine.
chet zar did this art for us (above) for the zine. chet was into drawing creepy shit all the time. he was in my art class at san pedro high school. me and aaron were super stoked when he gave us this piece. chet went on to become a very successful artist. check out:
chetzar.com
aaron did this dead kennedys comic (above) for the zine. pat meagher is the one seeing stars and he is on top of aaron's head in the crowd. aaron always put his friends in his drawings. letraset rub down backgrounds purchased at harbor office supply.
aaron draws more of our friends in this crowd drawing (above). silhouettes of pat speers (second from left), erick freels (pumping fist), marc olmos (finger drumming) and jessica lee smoking. ha.
here is a minutemen layout for their gig at angels gate cultural center on november 16, 1985. notice the letraset rub down backgrounds and the halftoned pictures. we had to actually get my brother's (rob ibarra) minutemen pix photographed with stat cameras just to turn them into half-toned stats for printing, it was super expensive. so were the letraset backgrounds and rub down type. it was super hard to do a fanzine back then without computers but we learned a lot about cut and paste.

in the zine section. big thanks to bryan ray turcotte. check out the layout below. aaron once got caught stealing rub down type at thrifty on 5th and gaffey (now rite aid) that we planned to use for the toilet times. he got detained and was told that they were gonna call the cops, i got away. they eventually let him go but aaron will tell you another story. aaron tells his side of the story in this same book (also in the zine section).

ISSUE FOURTEEN / October 2009
Number 14 has a bit of a uniqueness going for it that we can’t give away just yet. Oh fuck it – the entire issue is hand drawn, okay? That means there were no photos used by us, at least. Artist Michael Sieben did the cover, how cool is that! 14 starts off with a piece Halbadal calls “Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants,” in which he interrogates the four main San Pedro Skatepark Association accomplices about past, present and future skate gibberish, mostly about the Channel Street skatepark. Artist Victor Gastelum jives with Brooklyn, New York’s own Japanther on subjects from 9/11 and Katrina to juicing and warrior training. Shanty Cheryl gives us the skinny on the Bay Area duet, the Street Eaters. Todd Congelliere has a short talk with Aaron Cometbus on some Pinhead Gunpowder thangs. Vince Giobbe shovels Mexican food with Epic Debauchery. New band in town spiels by Cheryl and Coco featuring Bombon, The Couches, Last Day Off, Stoned At Heart and That’s Incredible. John Ransom gives his take on various “John Wayne” breakfasts and the Gaffey Street Diner. More tantalizing poems by Charles Bukowski. A Wire influenced Scott Aicher Comic. Lots of art provided by Aaron White, Elvis Segarich, Halbadal, Victor Gastelum, Joel Morales and Craig Ibarra, among others, plus tons of more goodies.

ISSUE THIRTEEN / May - August 2009
Shepard Fairey holding issue 13 at Subliminal Projects gallery in Los Angeles on August 22, 2009. Photo by Craig Ibarra.
Triskaidekaphobia? We here in San Pedro, CA embrace the number 13 for many reasons, but we won’t get into that. Issue 13 features an up to date interview with “outlaw artist,” Shepard Fairey on various topics that should quiet all the skeptics. Shepard also did the cover art for this issue. We talk with former pro skateboarder, rocker and record label owner, Todd Congelliere about his San Pedro based Recess Records, and what it takes to keep it going for over 20 years. Halbadal talks shit with up and coming L.A. rippers, Stab City on various hilarious subjects. Great skate-photo spread mostly of the local San Pedro, DIY, Channel Street skatepark and a couple other spots supplied by El Beardo. Former SST Records co-owner and writer, Joe Carducci gives us his take on political cycles and music undergrounds. A fair, but true restaurant review of Niko’s Pizzeria, brought to you by the Smut Peddlers own John Ransom. Our regular “Hanks Ghetto” page featuring Charles Bukowski poetry with Linda Bukowski’s permission of course. Another cool Scott Aicher comic, plus tons of reviews and much more. The reviews say that this is a San Pedro regional scene zine, but it is much more than that, trust me.
