Rita Lee was born in São Paulo, Brazil, to an American father, a dentist, and a mother of Italian ancestry. She was educated in a French language school and became fluent in Spanish, French and Italian, as well as her native Portuguese and the English that her parents spoke at home. She went to college, where she was a colleague of the popular actress Regina Duarte, but soon left for the musical carrer.
In 1966 Lee formed the band Os Mutantes with the brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias. The band released five albums between 1968 and 1972. In that time, Lee had also realsed her first two solo works, although these records were produced with fellow members of Os Mutantes.

With the help of friends Duglas Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Federico Aubele and Jad Fair, Cineplexx presents Picnic, a gorgeous Spanish-language record of beautiful harmonies and lush instrumentation similar to Belle & Sebastian a la The Boy with the Arab Strap, the swaying rhythms of Gilberto Gil and tender 60s rock reminiscent of Love and the Zombies.
Picnic is a rare treat of a perfect pop record with revelatory songs underneath the album's fuzzy, echoed wash.
