Rita Lee is a central figure in Brazilian rock. A former member of the seminal rock band Os Mutantes, she eventually departed from that group and began an extremely successful solo career in the rock and dance styles that have lasted for more than 35 years. The daughter of an amateur female pianist, she had piano classes with the famous pianist Madalena Tagliaferro when she was a kid. In place of the traditional adolescent debut ball, she asked to receive a drum set. Lee formed a band with two other friends when they met the brothers Arnaldo and Sérgio Dias Baptista. Adopting the name O'Seis, they recorded the single "O Suicida" which was never released. When the rest of the band left for college, only three of them remained. Picking the name Os Mutantes, they backed Nana Caymmi on her then-husband's composition "Bom Dia" (Gilberto Gil). When Gil met them, he invite them to accompany him at TV Record's 1967 III FMPB. They won second place for Gil's "Domingo no Parque". The novelty of electric guitars and a generalized irreverence of the mixing of strange orchestra was the beggining of the musical moviment Tropicalia. Soon after, they recorded their single "O Relógio". In 1968, they performed on the album/manifesto Tropicália ou Panis et Circensis, with Nara Leão, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Tom Zé. This was also when they recorded their first LP, Os Mutantes. They realesed many albums till 1972, when Rita was expelled of the group. Before leave Os Mutantes, Lee recorded two solo albums, "Build Up" (1970) and "Hoje é o Primeiro dia do Resto da Sua Vida" (1972). In 1973, she became the lead singer of the rock band Tutti Frutti that follow her to the success in subsequent years, releasing Lee's hits "Menino Bonito", Mamãe Natureza, "Ovelha Negra", "Agora só Falta Você", "Esse tal de Roque Enrow", "Coisas da Vida", "Miss Brasil 2000", "Jardins da Babilônia" and others. By that time, she was already called "The Queen of Brazilian Rock". Fruto Proibido (1975) is considered by many people the best brazilian rock album ever. In 1978, after 5 successful albums and huge hits, Tutti-Frutti was dissolved under internal dissension. Lee decided not to have a band anymore and record with her husband Roberto de Carvalho (married since 1976). In 1980, with "Lança Perfume," she achieved international recognition with even Prince Charles recognizing her as his favorite singer. In the 80's, her albums, openly danceable and fully committed to a commercial result, were breaking all selling records, achieving several hits (Bem me Quer, Baila Comigo, Saúde, Flagra, Vítima, Bwana, Pega Rapaz, Baila Comigo, Nem Luxo Nem Lixo, Mutante, Cor de Rosa Choque, Só de Você, Desculpe o Auê and many, many others) and her shows becoming mega-productions. In 1991, she performed on her show Bossa n' Roll, which had the greatest audience that year and launched the acoustic craze. The album sold 350.000 copies. After an acclaimed rock'n roll and feminist album in 1993, Lee was expressly required by Mick Jagger, who demanded personally that she open the Rolling Stones tour in Brazil. She was a great success, supplanting the Spin Doctors. After that, she toured for A Marca da Zorra. The following year, she became the first woman and first pop icon to be awarded with the Prêmio Shell de MPB. In 1997, she received the distinguished Prêmio Sharp de Música. She followed with a CD and tour for Santa Rita de Sampa and the mega-production Acústico MTV (MTV Unplugged), witch sold more then 650.000 copies. In 2000, she return with the rock roots and released the CD 3001. In 2001, Rita realesed Aqui, Ali em Qualquer Lugar (Bossa'n Beatles). On this album Rita Lee, in a very personal and inventive way, interprets 14 songs by the Beatles, her teenage idols. Five of the songs have been given new and quite fine Portuguese lyrics by Lee and all of the songs are performed in a very different way compared to the original recordings. The perhaps most impressive and surprising thing with this album is that Lee actually succeeds in making these old Beatles songs, some of which have been played almost to death over the years, sound fresh, interesting, and new. The Brazilian style that has been added to the songs doesn't at any point sound forced or out of place, and the arrangements and production by Roberto de Carvalho are both superb. The general style of the album is a rather gentle, bossa nova-inspired way of performing. A portuguese version of "If I Fell" called "Pra Você eu Digo Sim" was a hit in Brazil when it was released as a single. On the whole, one would imagine it impossible to make a more inventive or better Beatles interpretation album than this one. In 2003, Balacobaco, her latest studio album and acclaimed by the critic, was certified gold on less than a month and bring the hits "Amor e Sexo", "Tudo Vira Bosta" and "A Gripe do Amor". In 2004, she released MTV ao Vivo (Live MTV), another gold album. In 2007 - 08, Rita celebrates 40 years of success with the 3 DVDs Box "Biografitti" and with a new tour, called "Picnic".
Besides her musical career, she had a humor program (Radio Amador) on radio in 1986, which aired for 9 months. She wrote 3 children books in 1986, and appeared on some Brazilian movies like "Dias Melhores Virão" by Cacá Diegues, which granted her a prize at the Denzer Festival, Europe, in 1990. Impersonating the late singer/composer Raul Seixas in the short movie "Tanta Estrela por Aí", she was appointed Best Male Actor by Rio's mayoralty. On TV, she worked on the soap operas Top Model and Vamp and hosted her own show, TV Leezão, a version for MTV of Rádio Amador. From 2002 to 2004, she was one of the hostesses of the Brazilian cable TV talk show Saia Justa. In 2005 she started a new talk show, called Madame Lee, along with her husband.
