About me:

Jessie Lehmann started Rites of Rhythm in 2006 when she combined her work in counseling and her degree in philosophy with her ten years of studying, performing and teaching West African drumming. To increase her skills and gain authenticity, she has studied this art form for a total of five months during her trips to Guinee and Ivory Coast, West Africa in 2001 and 2007.

chix with stix rockin macru

Her teachers include Koumbana Conde of Percussions de Guinea, Bolokada Conde, Djibril Sylla, Mohammed Masa Bangoura, Kevin Meyame, Ballet Djolem, Yelemba D'Abidjan and Adama and Madou Dembele.

She has performed hundreds of times and taught in schools with five of Asheville's drum and dance ensembles: Common Ground(1998-2002), Ballet Warraba(2004) Avec la Force(2005-2007), and Ensemble Djembeso (2008-2009) sharing the stage with members of Toubab Krewe, Afromotive, Bolokada Conde, Alkaly Camara, Kevin Meyame and Adama and Madou Dembele. She has also worked with South Carolina's Borenya (2008) and now directs and performs with Asheville's Boom Chix.

Who I'd like to meet:

Rites of Rhythm is dedicated to culturally connecting communities through African drum classes, drum therapy, corporate drumming facilitation, school residencies and performance.

DRUM CLASSES focus on traditional drumming from Guinea, West Africa. The aim is to build skills in a structured environment with authenticity in mind. We work on technique used to play the instruments and focus on breaking down traditional polyrhythm. Classes can be catered to most any level.

THERAPEUTIC DRUMMING FACILITATION:

These sessions differ from the drum classes because the facilitations use West African drumming as a catalyst to provide a therapeutic rather than skill based experience. Using drumming mixed with the sharing of stories and facilitated discussion I am able to create a safe setting that encourages clients to reflect upon and take responsibility for their lives. Currently I am able to provide four tailored sessions: TEAMBUILDING, TRANSITION, CREATIVITY and PERSPECTIVE. Each session can be tailored to the organization's needs and can be single day events or weekly sessions. These sessions are great for drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers for teens and adults, therapeutic and behavioral programs for at-risk children and teens, already existing groups or organizations that need help with building trust and interpersonal skills among participants and for those with physical and mental disabilities.

CORPORATE DRUMMING FACILITATION:

Studies have shown that companies that build trust and positive relationships between employees are more apt to have increased production, innovation and retention. West African drumming is a great way to provide a unique, interesting experience that by its very nature will provide a framework to focus on trust, interpersonal relationships, teambuilding, personal integrity within a group setting, and cross-cultural understanding.

SCHOOL RESIDENCIES, LECTURE-DEMOS AND WORKSHOPS:

School Residencies are a great way to provide students with an in depth study of African music and culture. I can give week long sessions where I come every day, or do residencies that are only once a week but span over a period of 8 weeks and culminate with a school wide performance. I have taught African music in multiple school settings such as week-long residencies, after-school classes, one-day lecture-demos, and facilitated performance.

PERFORMANCE:

I am available to book performances for a number of settings: West African music with a melodic component, traditional drum and dance, or Brazilian Samba. All of these groups are able to play at schools, festivals, clubs/bars, and special events. I am also available as a freelance musician. ..

We are thrilled to announce Midnite will be playing their only two east-coast shows in the month of April at The Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC. Arguably the best live reggae band around, Midnite has sold out every show they've played in Asheville since 2005. We strongly encourage you to pick up your tickets in advance so you can be a part of the festivities.

    Greetings,

Well, '09 is here babies, and man are we ready! Vertigo Jazz Project is shooting out the gate with a tremendous night of live music w/ fusion masters Gongzilla at Stella Blue on SATURDAY 1/24/09!!! We will be joined by a full horn section of Asheville allstars for this show featuring Derrick Johnson (trombone) of Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, Ryan Knowles (sax) of The Afromotive, and Justin Ray (trumpet) of The Michael Buble' Band (yes ladies; that Michael Buble Band).

Plan on many suprises from this conglomerate of established and rising stars of Asheville and beyond.
This will be a big one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GONGZILLA:
Journalist Bill Milkowski called GZ "simply mind-boggling". Gongzilla first released a series of mostly instrumental albums featuring guest guitarists on each one, including jazz fusion legends Allan Holdsworth, David Torn and David Fiuczynski. More recently, Gongzilla has included some U.S. jamband heroes, like guitarist Chuck Garvey of moe., and has emphasized vocals, crafting songs which fuse with improvisational rock. Contradictions and balance; Rowe and Lozaga sing cool songs that will singe your soul while balancing both the hyper precision and the rockin' mayhem this band is capable of live.
The new studio record "Five Even" includes the aforementioned Garvey as well as Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's McGee plus guitarist David "Fuze" Fiuczynski (Screaming Headless Torsos) with bassist Kai Eckhardt of Garaj Mahal sitting-in too!
