   About R.L. Burnside
Robert Lee(AKA R.L.) Burnside, was born on November 23 1926 in Harmontown, Mississippi. A sharecropper for most of his life, R.L. would only pick up the guitar in his early twenties, when he was inspired by the music of such artists as John Lee Hooker. He would then go on to learn much of his music from another North Mississippi Hills Country Bluesman by the name of Mississippi Fred McDowell.

For a brief period of time in the 50's, R.L. moved to Chicago for better economic prospects, only to suffer more than one family tragedy. By 1959 he'd moved back to farm land in Mississippi and raise his family. Not to mention play on the weekends at friends houses and around local Juke Joints.

But it wasn't til the 90's when R.L. and many other bluesmen from the same area were introduced to the world by the independent label Fat Possum Records. Even though R.L. had done some recording in the past, it was only now that he garnered wider spread attention and a new younger generation of audience. His electric slide guitar blues to be paired with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion to make a loud and distorted album of epic proportions. After the success of A Ass Pocket of Whiskey, Burnside went on to record many more albums that can be seen to change with the times, as many records were an infusion of Blues and Hip Hop/Rap.

R.L. Burnside passed away on September 1 2005 at the age of 78. But he will always be remembered for his loud and raw style of blues, that did not always stick to the traditions of 12 beat and 16 beat blues, as he would often add extra beats too as he would see fit in what he called Burnside Style.
