Like every band history there are troubles and heartaches. They see band members come and go, label companies lie and cheat, and obstacles cross their way. That is the way it goes. Every band that has ever made it has their own unique way on how they got there. A different road that they took and different people that helped them get there. Whatever the story was or is they all wanted to reach a goal and they did. For a few it is a very easy process and for the majority they have to fall on their faces a couple of times before they get there.
The Rock N’ Roll Hooligans started up in December 13, 2004 in Nashville, TN, music city of America. It all began with Eliott Virula (lead guitar and vocals), Mike (rhythm guitar), Alex (bass) and Bryan (drums), Alex and Bryan being brothers. Their first show was at The Muse, a small venue downtown, where Mike introduced Eliott to The Carry-Ons in February 2005; later on Eliott would play a major role in their band. Conflict and tension began to grow between the band members against Mike resulting in his expulsion of the band in June 2005. In that same month a new member was added to their group named David taking over Mike’s old role.
They played at venues such as Hair of the Dog, The Rutledge, The End, The Five Spot and The Gibson Show Case. With this set up they recorded a demo album that they would sell at their shows, with Andrija whose record label is called The Bombshell in Nashville, but at that time was called The Basement of Murfreesboro. Promptly after they split up in January 2006. The reason for this conclusion was that Bryan left to school to Boston University on a Tennis scholarship. Alex left as well.
A lot happened in that year of 2006. Eliott formed a band named Pull The Trigger with Justin and Nathaniel. The purpose of this band was to play with Justin before he left to Philadelphia. This lasted two months. Soon after that was finished Eliott moved on and started a group named Live and Learn, which had very good success for what it, lasted. They completed one tour that allowed them to play in Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and California. Nathaniel and Eliott recognized their differences after their last show at The Five Spot in January 26, 2007 ending that chapter of Live and Learn.
Two weeks passed and Bryan returned after being kicked out of school, along with Alex. The Rock N’ Roll Hooligans were together once again. They practiced several times and played shows like Springwater, Tennessee. Alex didn’t want to play anymore for unknown reason and Bryan brought in a stand in that clashed with everyone after only playing three shows. Bryan began to slack off and ended up leaving as well. Their last four shows were played with Todd on drums and Jeff on bass. At this time Eliott was dating David’s sister who had a very unpleasant finish resulting in David and Eliott’s falling out finishing the Rock N’ Roll Hooligans once again. At this point Eliott was associated with the Carry-Ons and having played them before as a stand in, he joined their group permanently. Eliott toured with The Carry-Ons for a year and recorded an album with them.
A month after James Maclay joined the Carry-Ons as their drummer. They played with many bands, one being Stuck Lucky where they met Andy Moss. The communication grew between those three as the communication diminished with the Carry-Ons and Eliott and James decided to leave at the same time to start yet again with the Rock N’ Roll Hooligans in 2008. The set up now was Eliott Virula (lead guitar and vocals), Andy Moss (bass) and James Maclay (drums) being a three-piece band instead of the original four. The First practice took place in March of that year followed by their first show at The Muse in the 4-20 Extravaganza Show 2008. This show was a flop but it lead them to realize that this is exactly what they needed to do, pushing them to record their first album, Self-Titled, in mid April with record label JETpilot. Jim Ingalls who put down $3,000.00 for the Hooligans and even pressed every one of their CDs created JETpilot Records.
Soon after, in May they went on their first tour as the new and improved Rock N Roll Hooligans. They played in an abundance of cities such as St. Louis, Lexington, Atlanta, Knoxville, Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Cambridge, Boston, Long Island, Johnson City, Brooklyn, Birmingham and Wallingford. All these cities were located in Missouri, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, New York, Indiana, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Alabama. This tour was a huge accomplishment and they sold around 400 CDs that have inspired many new fans and have brought up many new opportunities.
A couple months after the first tour Andy had to leave to focus on his band, leaving on good terms. James asked his childhood friend Zach powers who had previously played with All We Seabees to help fill in with the shows they had already booked. To this day Zach has done a great solid and in January of 2010 the Hooligans will record a Vinyl EP with Zach and go from there. They are not done, and regardless of everything that they have been through to get to this point in their success, they are still not done growing; in fan base, talent and achievements.
