Founded in early 2003, Roadside Zoo quickly gained local popularity at parties and campus bars around the University of Michigan. Roadside Zoo is best described as funk-rock, though their music encompasses elements from jam music, coupled with a pop sensibility. Within a few months of their formation they were showcased on the nationally syndicated Mitch Albom Radio Show and they have also been featured in Relix Magazine.
Roadside Zoo has opened for many popular national acts such as The Big Wu, Ekoostik Hookah, Mofro, and former members of the Grateful Dead. They also played the highly acclaimed 10,000 Lakes Festival in 2005, where they shared the festival spotlight with artists such as Trey Anastasio of Phish, The Black Crowes, Les Claypool, G. Love & Special Sauce, Widespread Panic, Buckethead, and many other groups.
Currently, Roadside Zoo is spreading out, and is doing so with the aid of two full-length albums. Roger LeLievre of the Ann Arbor News writes, "[Roadside Zoo is] every bit as concerned with laying down an irresistible funk-rock dance groove as they are making solid, original music that engages the brain as well as the booty."
