About La Mirada
LA MIRADA is the newest and latest up-coming Tejano band from Houston, led by lead vocalist, 18-year-old Robbie Martinez.
With all of its members born and raised in the Greater Houston area, La Mirada was formed in 2002 by Robert Martinez Jr., a twenty year Tejano music veteran, and his son Robbie Martinez III, who at the time was a 14-year-old freshman at Houston's renowned H.S.P.V.A.
The current members of La Mirada are Robbie Martinez on vocals, accordion, and keyboards ; Robert Martinez Jr. on electric guitar ; and Mario Gonzales-Rodriguez on drums.
Having known each other for many years, band members Robert and Mario have had the pleasure to play and record with many bands, including recording together as teenagers on Oscar & Leonard Gonzales y La Mafia's first two albums. The two now bring to the group their wealth of experience, their old-school Tejano style, and their timeless passion for music. But the band's unique formula is only achieved by combining these elements with the musical knowledge, ability, and youthful creativity that 18-year-old Robbie brings to the table.
Robbie -- the band's lead singer, arranger, and youngest member -- has been playing the piano since the age of 6, and learned the accordion as a second instrument at age 11. In 2002 he was admitted to attend the Music Department at Houston's prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (H.S.P.V.A.) for jazz piano studies. Over the next 4 years he would continue to learn and gain experience playing with big band ensembles, jazz combos, and vocal pop groups, before graduating in 2006. Some of his greatest influences in this field include pianists Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, and Herbie Hancock, among others. Having grown up singing and playing many different styles of Spanish and English music, Robbie has been most greatly influenced by the early sounds of Tejano artists/groups from the 80's and 90’s, such as Mazz, La Mafia, Gary Hobbs, Jay Perez, La Fiebre, Tony de la Rosa, and The Hometown Boys, as well as other genres of Latino and American music.
While La Mirada’s repertoire consists of cover music and some original material, the group is constantly perfecting their own style and hopes to one day record with a major record label that would enable them to introduce their music to a vast audience. The group is a truly special blend of experience and youth, tradition and creativity, a unique formula which hasn't been seen in nearly a decade.
La Mirada has been making their debut in nightclubs and ballrooms in and around Texas. Some of their recent ventures include their first appearance at the 2007 TTMA Tejano Music Awards FAN FAIR in San Antonio's Market Square; a performance at Downtown Houston's Jones Plaza for the 2007 Tejano Roundup ; and a performance at the Miller Outdoor Theater at Hermann Park in Houston for the 27th Annual Festival Chicano in late 2006. The band's performance at the Chicano Festival was received well by the spectacular crowd of over 4,000+ people. La Mirada has even been asked to play as far as Tennessee for quinceaneras, weddings, and other social events.
The band has chosen their unique name to depict how they want to captivate their audience while on stage. “We chose the name for its many meanings,” says Robbie. “For instance, to one person La Mirada may reflect a certain appearance or style, while to another it may mean the way a pretty woman glances at you with her eyes, or the way you look back at her!” When asked what all this has to do with their performances on stage, he said, “We want to have that same kind of contact with our audience."
La Mirada is currently working on what will be their first full CD. Right now songs from their Demo CD can be heard on spanish radio stations and internet radio stations throughout the Southwest United States and Northern Mexico, as well as their first single “Maldito Amor”, a heart-wrenching tale of a man’s struggle to let go of the woman he loved and lost, which was composed by singer/songwriter Pete Espinosa, lead vocalist of La Fiebre from Pasadena. The CD, entitled Maldito Amor, is to be independantly released by Mira Productions.
