i arrived in London on December of 1974 after a long flight from Johannesburg via Niece where i was briefly detained at the Airport by the secret service who thought I might be an agent for the dark forces of racial hatred perpertrated by the then Afrikaaner regime. So here I am in London, no luggage, no warm clothes(my Scheduled flight, took off with my luggage after being mishandled, dragged out of the plane as though I were a Terrorist...and for the next two weeks(my luggage) was on a round-trip across the planet. Was delivered later on by the Immigration Officials. The upside of my extensive interrogation is, they fed me quite well, put me on a first class flight on to London & fucking apologised all the way to the Ministry of Internal Affairs...a bit of Justice served): 8 degrees was the temperature when I finally landed at Heathrow...It was , for me a tropical lad, one of the coldest nights I ever experienced. As I stepped out into the cold London Air I felt, for the first time in my life..A free MAN.
My fisrt job was as a Dish washer at the famous Hard Rock Cafe, at the time, the Place to be seen in london. they were operating from the corner of Piccadily avenue adjacent to Hyde Park.During this period, I and other Rhodesians(Zimbabweans)were caught in a catch 22 situation:our currency was not tenable in the UK, since Rhodesia was being punished, as every child should, for declaring their(whites only) independence without the consent ohf her majesty Queen Elizabeth and the Heads of the Commonwealth of Nations. It was fools money similar to the current situation in existence there, at this moment but less painful for the middle classes, thanks to the France & South africa, Japan & South Korea for breaking the Sanctions Embargo,it was more important for them to sell their cars & wares, than to put an end to racial intolerance, witout their trading illegally with this uncivilized Regime,Money barks like a Dog.... some times.
My plans to study, get my Degree & go back to my people were put on hold and day to day survival took precedence over every thing else.I had always collected and bought decent music during my teenage years mostly because being a boarder in one of Africas exclusive Schools, I could serve enough mula to purchase the very latest & ground breaking tracks/Albums.Since, I was at work in the weesh ours of the morning, I used to bring my own compiled tracks on cassette format to play on the House PA System and the staff & management started to look at me as more than just another dihwasher.
One day when most of the Rock celebrities were drinking & dining, a tall Guy with a huge afro hair DO walked in to the kitchen. To say I was excited, would be understating my reaction ..I was literally chaffed!!!, for this is the man whose most successful song had just topped the charts,worldwide..The late, Phill Lynott from Thin Lizzy. He commented that his friends liked my track selection & asked if I could play music at his Girls Birthday bash..I accepted instantly cause there is no way I could get any offer like that twice..am sure a lot of people at the time would have put their hats in.I did well & since... have never looked back.
I had a promotion to Bar staff level where my networking and saleskills helped me to meet people, who genuinely liked my musical knowledge & talentand were prepared to run with me.One of those & perhaps the most influential and significant in my carreer to date was my Soulmate at the time,Susan Alpert a cousin of the great man Herb Alpert Musician/bandleader/composer & Head of A& M records. We got a bit of cash and hired a stall at the famous Camden Town Markets..on our first day we sold 500 classic Albums a tenner each, a huge amount of money at the time and when we came back from our holiday in the South of France. We were offered a spot at an indoor Market further down the hill opposite the famous Roundhouse Theatre in Chalk Farm.
The record shop "Sapien Sounds" was part of a head shop, Londons premireHead Shop at the time: which sold expensive Dope paraphenalia and with a selection of up to 20 plus flavoured ciggarete rolling papers. For two years we ran a successful hangout where younger people the likes of Dave Stewart, annie Lennox,(ex Tourists..later Eurythmics) Buzzcoks etc, hungout there. As all things inevitably come to a close, Susan & I split up quite amicably & after buying her half share of the Business, I was on my own:totally struggling, until The chap who ran the Head Shop decided to pack it in & sell me his shop..at a fire sale price,resurection...SAVED !!!
Love beckoned its way this time under much happier circumstances.I met Colleen Hage an extremely atractive lass, an incredible dancer who can stimulate others to get in the act. She was an Australian Ballerina working in London..we got on because of her love for Reggae & interpretention of African Dance Moves & styles into her own choreographic projects and much respect for my People & their culture..still a rare thing at that time.We got married at the Chelsea Registry, in trendy Kings Road with a famous Princess : her nmouth wide open looking on in disbelief, God bless her: (not hate) from across the road...yes such was the world & its mind set back in the Day.My Employers at Dial 9 the most exclusive Club(at the time) in Mayfair where I worked, played such a big role at our wedding and to this day, we remain the best of friends.Love to you Guys always and evermore.Respect and Cratitude.
I sold up all the gear from my record section & stuff from the head shop and Colleen & I left for the African continent for the first time for me, after 8 years in exile..consolation for all the hardship I had to endure, is that no member of my (immediate) family passed away while I was gone. After wild celebrations from friends and my Tribe of (whom I am the true Leader) my ex- wife was treated like a real Princess should & up to this day is a most welcome visitor with or without me.She is an amazing woman.Love U always.
We went back to London to gather & organise our trip to the land Down Under and arrived in Aussie in early february 82.
We settled in Perth and luckily for us,I scored a plum weekend gig at a leading night spot.During this time I ventured into radio programming via/through the local University Radio Station...6uvs-fm presenting a Reggae progranmme that concntrated on the Genre being prerformed in different languages, from other cultures..As Led Zep once sang..The song remains the same.....I also got a commission through the "West Australian" Broad sheet to become a contributing writer for their fortnightly Rock & Arts publication..".The Five O clock News" as concert/live music reviewer & Album critic. At a time when Disco was considered a SUCK tirp I put my foot forward ..right into the mud by claiming that "Thriller" will outsell any Album ever made..was laughed atby my peers ..made to look silly and stupid..the last laugh is mine!!!Hate is a bad energy some of my friends here in this beautiful land spent the whole day, at Centnial Park in Sydney, building piles of Disco Records and set fire to them after large doses of Drugs, lots of Booze,...names aside(you all know whom you are)... Adolf (f*cn) Hitler did the same too..a low point in our lives.....INDEED!!!!
Finally , it was time to hit the big smoke, so...Sydney here we are.On arriving I landed the plummest gig of my life. From the frivolity of a drunken DJ Industry afternoon, I was offered a DJ/MC/Promoter position at The most famous & known Music venue in this country ever..at "Selinas "Coogee Bay Hotel..and worked with all the Australian bands I can think of including my good friends Inxs...am currently putting together a Photo/Essay on Aussie Rock for the past 20 years, For an Irish Publication in Dublin, out in 2009 January, worth checking out and will keep all you Spacers informed.
