   Robert Creeley's Blurbs
About me:
Robert Creeley (May 21, 1926 - March 30, 2005) was an American poet, author of more than sixty books, and usually associated with the Black Mountain poets, though his verse aesthetic diverged from that school's. He was quite friendly with Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg, John Wieners and Ed Dorn. He taught for many years at the University at Buffalo. He lived in Waldoboro, Maine, Buffalo, New York and Providence, Rhode Island, where he taught at Brown University. He was a recipient of the Lannan Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, and was much beloved as a generous presence in many poets' lives.

Creeley was born in Arlington, Massachusetts and grew up in Acton, Massachusetts. He was raised by his mother with four sisters, and lost his left eye at the age of four. He entered Harvard University in 1943, but left to serve in the American Field Service in Burma and India 1944-5. He returned to Harvard in 1946, but took his BA from Black Mountain College in 1955. When Black Mountain briefly closed, Creeley moved to San Francisco, where he met Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, and befriended Jackson Pollock.

He was a chicken farmer briefly before he became a teacher.

An MA from the University of New Mexico followed in 1960. He began his academic career by teaching at Albuquerque Academy starting in around 1958 until about 1960 or 1961. This was followed by two semesters at Black Mountain. Afterwards he wandered about a bit before settling into the English faculty of "Black Mountain II" at the University at Buffalo in 1967. He would stay at this post until 2003, when he received a post at Brown University. At the time of his death, he was in residence with the Lannan Foundation in Marfa, Texas.

He first received fame in 1962 from his poetry collection For Love. He would go on to win the Bollingen Prize, among others, and was the New York Poet Laureate from 1989-1991.

In his later years he was an advocate of, and a mentor to, many younger poets, as well as to others outside of the poetry world. He went to great lengths to be supportive to many and he had great sympathy for 'ordinary' people. Responding seemed to be essential to his personal ethics, and he seemed to take this responsibility extremely seriously, in both his life and his craft. In his later years, when he became well-known, he would go to lengths to make strangers, who approached him as a well-known author, feel comfortable. In his last years he used the Internet to keep in touch with many younger poets and friends. He was rather shy, somewhat cautious, but he was not at all afraid; he would stand up in situations where many others would not.

Robert Creeley died at sunrise on March 30th, 2005, in Odessa, Texas of complications from pneumonia. His death resulted in an outpouring of grief and appreciation from many in the poetry world. He is buried in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He was scheduled to visit Albuquerque Academy, where he held a teaching post, 10 days after the day he died to help celebrate their 50th anniversary.

We do not so much need the help of our friends as the confidence of their help in need." -- Epicurus (3rd century B.C.)
Do not protect yourself by a fence, but rather by your friends. -- Czech. Proverb
One of the surest evidences of friendship that one individual can display to another is telling him gently of a fault. If any other can excel it, it is listening to such a disclosure with gratitude, and amending the error.-- Edward Bulwer-Lytton
It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business. -- Mahatma Gandhi
Life is to be fortified by many friendships. To love and to be loved is the greatest happiness of existence. -Sydney Smith
The language of friendship is not words but meanings. -- Henry David Thoreau

Hi ...I am afraid I have not been a very good friend lately...I am not sure exactly why...I have really been letting a lot of things get to me, that shouldn't...my health has not been 2 good since feb., and I know I need to go to the doc, but truthfully, I am afraid too...things are jus' weighing really heavily on my mind right now I guess, I am letting depression eat my lunch, and I know that is a no win situation...etc...I am sorry...I am gonna try to do better...I love ya, and all my online friends so very much...and I hope you have a wonderful week...Walk in peace and beauty always, Harley

Second issue will be out in next months. Anyone who cares to be considered should sent output to myself or the issue's premier . . . Sir Cab Tran.Folks have until July 10 to submit w/ the goal of getting this particular rag printed & presented by 1 August 2008. So, to begin, we focused on "something around renewing the avant-garde." As I said at this time last time "that's a broad bit of rhetoric" and of that "this I know."

So, so, again, we will dig, down, in order to to find the rumblings / ramblings that exist in the "minds of today's thinkers, poets" & philo-minded scops. We will connect it all "back to the past that chopped the trail." In terms of words, etc., this mag, again, will include poetry, fiction and perhaps criticism (i.e. anyone have anything to say about the life & words of Borges the great Argentine avant-garder?). "Non-fiction has to be really, really good to be considered." Send stuff my way via electronic mail or in a post an online social community post (i.e. myspace or facebook . . . a small rub that surely concerns & itches my rear-end . . . but a small price if it is a convenience for the hipster-brooders). Again, if you could it would be considerate if this missive were to be disseminated along to friends & thinkers in the greater circles rippling out. All submissions are welcome if the writer's central thesis runs around ideas not representative of the greater populace.

The first run (issue) ran 100 in number in art book form. Brendan Stewart served us well during the first go-around in his role of painter / book builder. Once again, he will plug this same spot in our starting five. We went for a 96-pager last time and we will duplicate this feat. As O. M. Olson wrote, one who enters this seedy venture need be aware of the "lie of the wide audience." This advice we follow along w/ the book of Maximus. Early order price is $10 and copies can be secured anytime going forward. They tell me the billionaires & hedge-fund fatcats consider original "art" a good investment. We wouldn't know anything about this condition of compromise. Still, cash or checks work well. 628 Toole Avenue, Missoula, MT 59802 is my wayward shelter down the say from the Pov's proposed daytime drunk-tank site. The narrows widen.

Remember:

if we don't engage the margins we don't engage much. In that case we should consider Pound reckoning that we should drop the entire sorted affair and head out for a match of tennis. I implore each of you to open the "field." As some of us turn 30 we follow Duncan & Dorn, Glover & Clarke.

Movement,
TC
